The state of Alabama, which requires a photo ID to vote, announced this week that it would stop issuing drivers licenses in counties where 75 percent of registered voters are black.
Due to budget cuts, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said that 31 satellite DMV offices would no longer have access to drivers licenses examiners, meaning that residents will need to travel to other counties to apply for licenses. The move comes just one year after the states voter photo ID law went into effect.
AL.coms John Archibald asserted in a column on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Justice should open an investigation into the closings.
Because Alabama just took a giant step backward, he wrote. Take a look at the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters. Thats Macon, Greene, Sumter, Lowndes, Bullock, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Hale, and Montgomery, according to the Alabama Secretary of States office. Alabama, thanks to its budgetary insanity and inanity, just opted to close driver license bureaus in eight of them.
Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one, Archibald explained. But maybe its not racial at all, right? Maybe its just political. And lets face it, it may not be either But no matter the intent, the consequence is the same.

(12,157 posts)The smaller rural counties in Texas no longer have DPS offices for driver's licenses. Photo Voter ID the Poll Tax of my youth. It is hard to believe but there were some here at DU who thought photo ID was no big deal.

(3,457 posts)This is a transparent attempt to disenfranchise black voters.
Sending in the National Guard here to establish a democratic state would be more important than attempting to do so in Afghanistan.

(38,958 posts)and multiple civil suits that require the State to provide access to the documents which they have required for voting. Those documents should also be provided at no charge as they are now a requirement. I am in hopes that the ACLU is heading their way along with other organizations that could provide assistance with such legal actions.
Frankly the whole voter ID thing is absurd..... If you are a registered voter you should only have to provide the documents from the local election bureau.

(50,269 posts)If they insist on requiring IDs, that is the solution. Of course you're putting all the post offices in jeopardy now. They'll be closing them to avoid issuing IDs.

(1,015 posts)Earlier this year (2011), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker became one of the many GOP governors to sign a law disenfranchising voters who do not have a photo ID a law that disproportionately affects elderly voters, young voters, students, minorities and low-income voters. Having disenfranchised tens of thousands of Wisconsin voters, Walker is now making it harder for many of these voters to obtain the ID they need to regain their right to participate in the next election:
Gov. Scott Walkers administration is working on finalizing a plan to close as many as 10 offices where people can obtain drivers licenses in order to expand hours elsewhere and come into compliance with new requirements that voters show photo IDs at the polls.
One Democratic lawmaker said Friday it appeared the decisions were based on politics, with the department targeting offices for closure in Democratic areas and expanding hours for those in Republican districts. [
] Rep. Andy Jorgensen, D-Fort Atkinson, called on the state Department of Transportation to reconsider its plants to close the Fort Atkinson DMV center. The department plans to expand by four hours a week the hours of a center about 30 minutes away in Watertown. [
