The name Rebels came from those in Southern Nevada rebelling against being part of the Northern Nevada campus. In 1955 the student newspaper published its first issue of The Rebel Yell. A Confederate soldier battle cry has been called a rebel yell. Confederate-themed associations playing off the North vs South battle in the state started popping up with Southern Nevada students crowning a southern Belle and the student government calling itself the Confederated Students of Nevada Southern ...

(118,211 posts)The British at the time called them Yankees or colonials; their supporters often called them patriots. Various subgroups had common nicknames (such as "Liberty Boys" . Washington himself later seems to have sometimes called them "the old line." In my education, they were usually called the revolutionaries.

The school was started in1963, at the height of the civil rights movement, yet there are many who are so tone deaf that they can't see why anyone would see a problem with the Jonny Reb mascot, the Confederate flag and the Dixie fight song. They claim that there was never anything racist intended.

I never had any problem with their mascot when they had conference games with my school.
I just hated them because they kicked our butts every year.

(56,177 posts)and all the imagery associated it with it is fairly western-themed..it's a stretch to say it's anything to do with the confederacy.
