(44,571 posts)The tow truck operator must be the richest person in town! I'd hire someone to just stand on the corner all day and call me. And I'd have the ringtone of a cash machine!

(21,786 posts)they have "too low when flashing", which is not the same thing and pretty clearly doesn't work as well; metal truck box strikes sheet metal sign? Makes a hell of a noise. Much more effective warning that "watch out for flashing lights".

(43,049 posts)and North Ave is the way to get from Newark Airport and Port Newark to other places inside NJ.
The signage is OK, but cluttered, and a box truck or semi would mash it maybe once a month with the ensuing headscratching and tieups. The bridge is 4 tracks of AMTRAK and Jersey Central, so it's not going to be raised and lowering the road would mean massive flooding problems.
The worst one I saw was when a Porsche couldn't stop in time and ended up under the rear wheels of the truck. Truck driver didn't know he was there until the yelling caught his attention.

(5,624 posts)the insurance companies representing them have lost on this bridge. I wouldn't want to own a truck rental company in Durham, NC thats for sure.

Yes, I've lived in the area and know that bridge well. It's an oldie and has provided many hours of footage for WRAL newscasts over the years.

(26,117 posts)The bus was owned by a local pub & would shuttle patrons back & forth from the busier downtown bar area. I think the driver usually drove a campus bus (which fits under the bridge) and just forgot to take an alternate route.

(26,355 posts)The railroad won't spend the money to rebuild the bridge to modern highway codes.
There are also main sewer lines just under the road, so they can't just lower the roadbed to get more clearance.
So what do the railroad people do when too many people crash into the bridge? They put a barrier girder up just before the bridge, to can-open the trucks before they damage the bridge.
Problem solved...

(111,130 posts)would get out with a folding measuring stick and let air out of the tires until they could squeak the shorter trucks through, refill the tires with compressed air on the other side.
Now, some of them have undoubtedly enjoyed the dubious benefits of NCLB and don't realize 13>11.6 and they'll end up with a roofless trailer if they try to go under that bridge.
