2. Not sure what the OP is referring to, but I can tell you this.

Matt Lauer, of the Today Show, nailed that sheriff this morning.

Apparently, the good sheriff wrote a letter after Sandy Hook. A letter to Joe Biden saying that gun control was NOT the answer, and that it would NOT stop school shootings.

So maybe that's what the OP is on about. Hard to tell though.

Which, fine, you don't want to glorify him, but honestly who except for extreme psychopaths glorifies mass shooters anyways?

Gun enthusiasts and NRA types will No-True-Scotsman mass shooters to death, but not glorify them.

And unless you're willing to suppress all information regarding a mass shooting from the public, there will always be a name associated with the shooting, like it or not.

It just strikes me as a complete non-issue.

the sheriff is an asshole. The event will be remembered much longer than the shooters name even if it is used. The only ones I can remember is Klebold and Harris. The Sheriff is doing all the wrong things as he is with his opinion.

Just the shooter - here, there, and everywhere.

I remember the place names.

No interest in remembering the killers.

refused to say the shooters name and will continue to do so.

One reporter ask the names of the killed and wounded so they could talk about the "right" people according to the sheriff but he didn't give those names either.

written by a sociologist who says that evidence suggests that naming the shooter and talking about motivations does, in fact, encourage copycat shootings.

My aim here is not to blame the media: such events have undeniable news value, and there is intense public interest in uncovering their details. But it's important to recognize that such incidents are not mono-causal, and sensational news coverage is, increasingly, part of the mix of events that contributes to these rampages.

We need to figure out how to balance the public interest in learning about a mass shooting with the public interest in reducing copycat crime. The guidelines on reporting on teen suicides were established after a spate of teenage suicides in the United States, some through suicide pacts, in the 1980s. Those who created the guidelines looked at examples from other countries -- for example, the subway suicides in Vienna in the 1980s, which decreased after the media changed its coverage -- and provided specific recommendations: Don't refer to the word suicide in the headline. Don't report the method of the suicide. Don't present it as an inexplicable act of an otherwise healthy person.

With that as a model, here are some initial recommendations.

The media influences in many more ways than simply saying their name. If they connect it to some type of fame, like a movie or a video game, now there is an influence.

I also need to know more about who wrote the article. I

Post from the murderer...

"I have noticed that so many people like him (Vester Flanagan) are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more you're in the limelight."

I am posting this next to the last paragraph of the article

The authors are discussing over hyping the event rather than reporting it.

mentioning the name for at least a few weeks and that the media should avoid reporting on motivations and creating a psychological dossier; we know the killer is disturbed--that's a foregone conclusion--so, the author says, knowing which video games he played or which bands he liked is immaterial to anything other than sensationalism

That makes the 2nd amendment winning over the 1st amendment. An really, how much can CNN and FOX hide from teenagers.

They have their own mobile media and have beaten most of us to the sites that have all that information. The author seems to live back in the days of "Father Knows Best" where they all sat around the dinner table and daddy dished out words of wisdom in addition to food.

Chris Harper Mercer

The rambling document left behind, and believed to be written by the shooter, lamented an isolated life with little promise, the official said.

The contents and tone of the document, the official said, tracked the often desperate and depressed writings from members of a loosely affiliated group known as the "beta boys." The official said members associated with the group share profound disappointment with their lots in life and the lack of meaningful relationships.

Bush, Stuff Happens

But I resist the notion -- and I did, I had this, this challenge as governor, because we have, look, stuff happens, there's always a crisis and the impulse is always to do something and it's not necessarily the right thing to do."
Now doesn't that make the victims feel special!
