(CNN)The day before Pope Francis met anti-gay county clerk Kim Davis in Washington last week, he held a private meeting with a longtime friend from Argentina who has been in a same-sex relationship for 19 years.
Yayo Grassi, an openly gay man, brought his partner, Iwan, as well several other friends to the Vatican Embassy on September 23 for a brief visit with the Pope. A video of the meeting shows Grassi and Francis greeting each other with a warm hug.
In an exclusive interview with CNN, Grassi declined to disclose details about the short visit, but said it was arranged personally by the Pope via email in the weeks ahead of Francis' highly anticipated visit to the United States. <snip>

This represents an interesting turn of events.

I think he may have met with a black dude as well.

(11,197 posts)just goes to show our conservative Democrats aren't always so very different from their GOP counterparts when it comes to issues involving the LGBT community. Let them laugh, their views don't really register with me anyways.

(53,936 posts)As a gay man, I don't give a shit who he "meets" with (and it wasn't a same-sex couple, he met with an old friend who HAPPENS to be part of a same-sex couple), I care what he says and what he believes, and this man says and believes some really shitty things about us.
NorthCarolina
(11,197 posts)where conventional wisdom would indicate there shouldn't BE anything positive.
Behind the Aegis
(53,936 posts)To me, this ranks up there with "some of my best friends are..." followed by something bigoted about the "friend's group". He met with a friend, not a gay person. If he had met with the head of "Dignity" or something in that vein, then it would be a "positive", but still far from the mark.

(11,197 posts)Doesn't mean I must see things the same way. From my perspective I think that given the fact we are dealing with the Holy See of the Catholic Church I'll accept baby steps. So in that vein I do see this as something positive.
Behind the Aegis
(53,936 posts)You can see this how you want, which is clear. I don't see this as "baby steps" or anything of the sort. I see this as a political ploy, a gay prop, if you will, because the poor Pope got "blindsided" ( ) by meeting with an anti-gay bigot, then later, as he was leaving the country, makes a statement about being a "contentious objector." To me, the latter says much more than the former. This is lipstick on a pig.

(11,197 posts)"You have been my guide, continuously moving my horizonsyou have shaped the most progressive aspects of my worldview," Grassi wrote to future Pope in an email, according to National Geographic magazine. "And to hear this from you is so disappointing."
Grassi told CNN that Francis -- then Cardinal Jorge Margio Bergoglio -- wrote back, saying that he was sorry to have upset his former student and promising that "homophobia" had no place in the Catholic Church.
Grassi said he believes the Pope was "misled" into meeting with Davis, who served six days in a Kentucky jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
promising that "homophobia" had no place in the Catholic Church
What previous Pope do you believe would have ever said that? I reiterate...baby steps.
Behind the Aegis
(53,936 posts)Also, this comes down to how they define "homophobia." Defending against marriage equality, same-sex adoption/parents, and civil rights is not homophobia to them. FFS, Davis said she wasn't homophobic too! Oh, did you foget what cased the future Pope to say what he said?
At one point, the future pontiff suggested that same-sex marriage is the work of the devil.
It is spin! Nothing more. You can call it "baby steps", I will call it PR.

(11,197 posts)Hell, Hillary Clinton herself only happened to "evolve" on the issue like Tuesday.

(53,936 posts)Fine, if it works for you. It doesn't for me. Passive homophobia is still homophobic.

(53,936 posts)I wasn't saying the meeting with his friend, who happens to be gay and in a same-sex relationship, was the ploy, I was saying the revelation of the meeting is the ploy/PR manipulation.
Kingofalldems
(38,441 posts)And the Pope himself asked for the meeting.
As a Catholic for 60+ yrs. Francis is the best Pope I have ever seen, so I do give him the benefit of the doubt.

At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother, and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of Gods law engraved in our hearts.
Cardinal Bergoglio continued: Let us not be naive: this is not simply a political struggle, but it is an attempt to destroy Gods plan. It is not just a bill (a mere instrument) but a move of the father of lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.
The cardinal also noted that today the country, in this particular situation, needs the special assistance of the Holy Spirit to bring the light of truth on to the darkness of error, it need this advocate to defend us from being enchanted by many fallacies that are tried at all costs to justify this bill and to confuse and deceive the people of good will.

Lets think also of genetic manipulation, of the manipulation of life, or of the gender theory, that does not recognize the order of creation.
With this attitude, man commits a new sin, that against God the Creator.
The true custody of creation does not have anything to do with the ideologies that consider man like an accident, like a problem to eliminate.
God has placed man and woman and the summit of creation and has entrusted them with the earth.
The design of the Creator is written in nature.
