I've never hunted, nor even touched a gun, and I doubt I ever will. But in the UK more than a million people a year "participate in shooting, including game shooting, clay shooting and target shooting."
See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunting_and_shooting_in_the_United_Kingdom
But the most recent mass shooting in the UK was in 2010 and the most recent UK school shooting was in 1996:

It's perfectly possible to have sensible gun control while protecting the rights of hunters.

(102,141 posts)are one thing.
Those who use semi-automatic assault type weapons designed specifically to kill humans in war, who poach or shoot at their prey from helicopters or using spotlights at night-- or cage-released or purposely hobbled animals are quite another.
My father was a hunter who observed a code--one of respect for the lives he took, whether fowl or deer. He would never ever have justified taking any animal life just for the "thrill" of the kill--including the little "shits" that shoot bb guns at squirrels, birds, rabbits for "fun" in their back yards I don't think all hunters today follow the same standards and I surely know not all instill the same values, safe gun handling lessons and responsibility in their kids. .
I still have some respect for "responsible, ethical" hunters.. but that has diminished greatly as more cross the line into the "fanatical obsessive guns above all else" mindset and who so dramatically diminish value of both human and animal life--for whatever reasons.

(37,748 posts)Though one may validly conflate hunting and canned hunting, as the only relevant difference is the increased likelihood of notching one's belt with the latter over the former. As the form, the format and the agenda are all the same, the only difference appears to be branding and an ethical convenience.
