Yes, let's focus on that or whether Davis was specifically invited in person or not and not on the fact that this Pope has steadfastly and repeatedly and publicly taken the same side as Davis on this issue and there is no debating that.

"let's focus on that or whether Davis was specifically invited in person or not..."

But that's precisely what the trending arguments has been over the past three days until it was revealed she was less than honest in regards to it. Many people did in fact, focus on it to better facilitate conclusions already reached.

To be honest, I didn't see anyone in the relevant conversations on DU ignore, minimize or trivialize the visit until (and only until) it became clear Ms. Davis was not completely forthcoming in regards to the nature of the visit.

She claimed she got to visit the pope. The vatican confirmed that, but then it said it would not necessarily mean it was a statement of support. The Vatican has not and will not comment on the visit further.

Based upon that we can only say this about the rest of her claims

 • We have no confirmation or refutation of whether he gave her a rosary or not

 • We have no confirmation or refutation of if they said they would pray for each other or not (but lets be honest hes the pope he probably did say that.

 • We have no confirmation or refutation of whether he told her to stay strong.

But now based upon these vague statements by the vatican people are claiming she has been rebuked when in fact....the vatican did not rebuke a single claim she has made.

They said the ONLY audience of the weekend was with the gay friend and his group. She was just one of many people who were ushered through a meet and greet.

http://www.people.com/article/pope-francis-kim-davis-meeting-not-endorsement-vatican

Lombardi said that the pope met with and greeted dozens of people at the Vatican's embassy that day just before leaving for New York City and such brief meetings – like the one with Davis – are standard for papal visits. He said such meetings "are due to the Pope's characteristic kindness and availability."

"The only real audience granted by the Pope at the Nunciature [the Vatican's equivalent of an embassy] was with one of his former students and his family," Lombardi said.

Well unless on the street, he may stop and bless a child or two. He probably didn't know her from Adam until someone invited her to a gathering of a lot of people and maybe they talked for a minute. She definitely didn't have a one on one with the pope.

She has apparently evolved from a religion with a robust intellectual tradition to one which believes that the Bible is the source of all truth. Both of course consider homosexuality a serious sin and virulently oppose gay marriage but as a Catholic, the much married Ms. Davis would be considered as much of a sinner as Pope Francis's gay buddy.

I've known quite a few people who were born Catholic but became evangelicals because they sought a religion which told them in no uncertain terms what was right and what was wrong.

She's one of the people I've been keeping up with via Facebook since our class reunion a few years ago. She was very religious even then--I always thought she would become a nun--but now she's an evangelical--with a vengeance.

My sense is that she is searching for absolute answers--Catholicism--at least the more liberal 60s-70s Catholicism we grew up with is much more open to debate and henceforth uncertainty. She's not unusual. My sister-in-law is the same way.

It's much more comforting to some people to have all the answers right there in one book--as interpreted by their pastor of course.
