Republicans Are Using Fear and Guns to Keep Us 'Safe.' It's Killing Us.

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE

Meanwhile, over here, the president brought out that big bag of fcks of his, turned it upside down and inside out, to demonstrate to the Congress and to the country that he has no more to give. He's fed up with having to address the bloodshed resulting from this country's lunatic devotion to its firearms, and with a political establishment too cowed to do anything about it. This, of course, is partly a function of the fact that one of our two political parties has gone insane. The president has such a real gift for cold, righteous anger that you wish he'd deployed it more. However, I would like to point out one thing about part of the president's statement, which I first did on Lawrence O'Donnell's TV show last night. The president expressed surprise that,

When Americans are killed in mine disasters, we work to make mines safer. When Americans are killed in floods and hurricanes, we make communities safer. When roads are unsafe, we fix them to reduce auto fatalities. We have seatbelt laws because we know it saves lives.

The fact is that we do not do nearly enough on mine safety after mine disasters because one of our two political parties is insane and won't allow it. The fact is that one of our political parties is insane and has marked Chris Christie lousy specifically because he accepted help from the federal government after half his state blew out to sea. The fact is that we can't get an effective infrastructure bill passed because one of our two political parties is insane and would rather shove money upwards while the rest of us drive on gravel roads across crumbling bridges. Is that politicizing this massacre? Goddamn right, it is. They really are the fcking mole people, aren't they?

In addition, it should be noted (again) that Sheriff John Hanlin, who so adamantly refuses to use Christopher Harper-Mercer's name, and who reprimanded reporters sternly not to use it themselves, adheres to the curious interpretation of his duties common to far too many sheriffs in the western part of the country. In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, he wrote a letter to vice-president Joseph Biden stating his intention to commit quiet sedition.

"The United States Supreme Court has ruled that when a Sheriff chooses to enforce an unconstitutional directive, he is violating his Constitutional Oath…I will NOT violate my Constitutional Oath .... any [directive] offending the Constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies," he said.

There is only one of our two political parties which, at its highest levels, plays footsie with this kind of lunacy.
