Two Years Before Flooding, South Carolina Republicans Opposed Sandy Relief

South Carolina has endured record-breaking rainfall over the last several days, prompting President Obama to declare a federal state of emergency and deploy FEMA. The Charleston area alone has been pounded by at least a foot of rainfall in just 72 hours. The Charleston Post and Courier described the severity of the weather:

On Charleston’s flooded streets, countless stalled vehicles sat in water up their door handles. Paddleboards and rafts navigated where vehicles no longer could travel.

Shelters established in North Charleston, West Ashley and Summerville offered a safe haven to those most impacted by the floods. They included 47-year-old Wallace Julius, who came to Charleston earlier this week after losing most of his possessions to flood waters in North Carolina. What little he had left was ruined in Saturday’s rain, he said.

The state’s flood-stricken residents flocking to federal shelters for assistance are likely grateful for the help, but where does the Palmetto State’s Congressional delegation stand?

by ignoring those who support selfish, myopic and hurtful policies.

By all means, give the residents the support they need.

But they should be forced to recognize the representatives and policies they support whole-heartedly refused to help others in similar circumstances.

That is how we grow.

But that's ok. If it makes you feels smart to say so, lol.

You and others on this thread sound like tea-partiers in that you don't want to help people in need.

I hope you never suffer a weather event or any other kind of natural disaster.

I've experienced floods, fire, and hurricanes. I have nothing but empathy for those dealing with disaster. I don't care what their politics are. I'm a human being who feels for others.

Some of the comments I read here on DU about this situation chill me to the bone. How cold you must be inside to not care about those suffering.

YOU wake up to your living room full of water. YOU find your car under water. YOU go underneath your best friend's house to retrieve her drowned cat. YOU can then talk about how people need to be taught lessons.

Good lord, oh never mind. I just have no words.

Real people there, ya know? Including DUers.

Wow, learning here who is really "progressive" and who is not.

Sitting at your computer laughing up your sleeve at people who have lost their homes. Do you think only GOPers lost their homes? No, that's not the case. The GOPers are probably perfectly ok.

But let's sit back and snark at the rest of the state because they just happen to live there.

God help you.

that I am talking about GOP politicians, like their Governor and Congressmen, not the citizens. And pointing out the hypocrisy doesn't mean I don't want Fed aid for the State. That is for people like Lindsay Graham. Or shouldn't we point out that he voted against Sandy relief.

to help their citizens. i don't care what the politicians said after Sandy. The only thing I would expect is that they have to ask for it. They need to ask the federal government for help - that's enough of a message for me.

But it's also appropriate to call out the politicians who would deny aid when disasters happen elsewhere, but are first in line when it happens in their districts.

So the citizens are responsible for the votes of their legislators since they voted them in overwhelmingly time and time again. And in the future they will vote them in again. And if there is a disaster in the NE again they will probably vote to deny federal aid AGAIN.

And I will bet the GOP delegation voted to SHUT DOWN the government just recently. Perhaps the government should have been shut down right now. Then there would be no help for everyone.

And the same damned GOPPERS in the west who don't want to pay taxes and really don't support the firefighters saving their asses are crying their asses off because their house burned. Yet they would not support better wages and disability protection for these same firefighters.

They bastards want it both ways as long as minorities, the sick, disabled, veterans don't get help. They don't complain when these people are actually denied services.
