(25,816 posts)Grace Lee Boggs (June 27, 1915 October 5, 2015) was an American author, social activist, philosopher and feminist.[5] She is known for her years of political collaboration with C.L.R. James and Raya Dunayevskaya in the 1940s and 1950s.[6] She eventually went off in her own political direction in the 1960s with her husband of some forty years, James Boggs, until his death in 1993.[7] By 1998, she had written four books, including an autobiography. In 2011, still active at the age of 95, she wrote a fifth book, The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century, co-written by Scott Kurashige and published by the University of California Press.

Michelle and I were saddened to hear of the passing of author, philosopher, and activist Grace Lee Boggs. Grace dedicated her life to serving and advocating for the rights of others from her community activism in Detroit, to her leadership in the civil rights movement, to her ideas that challenged us all to lead meaningful lives. As the child of Chinese immigrants and as a woman, Grace learned early on that the world needed changing, and she overcame barriers to do just that. She understood the power of community organizing at its core the importance of bringing about change and getting people involved to shape their own destiny. Graces passion for helping others, and her work to rejuvenate communities that had fallen on hard times spanned her remarkable 100 years of life, and will continue to inspire generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with Graces family and friends, and all those who loved her dearly.

(11,833 posts)Her message that revolution will come from from us, from the bottom up (not merely by changing leadership at the top) is quite timely. We are the change.
