CNN: Graham opposed Sandy aid but wants help in South Carolina
[IMG][/IMG]
Washington (CNN)Sen. Lindsey Graham is asking for federal aid for his home state of South Carolina as it battles raging floods, but he voted to oppose similar help for New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2013.
"Let's just get through this thing, and whatever it costs, it costs," Graham told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room" on Monday of the devastating floods in his home state.
Graham was among the Republican senators who opposed a federal aid package in January 2013 to assist states hit by Hurricane Sandy, but now he doesn't remember why.
"I'm all for helping the people in New Jersey. I don't really remember me voting that way," Graham said.

(135,828 posts)When the Senate passed the long-delayed $50.5 billion Hurricane Sandy relief package Monday, 36 Republicans voted against the bill. But of the 32 no-votes from Senators who are not brand-new members, at least 31 came from Republicans who had previously supported emergency aid efforts following disasters in their own states.
While opponents complained that the bill contained too much unrelated pork, each of the 30 of them who had been present earlier this month when the Senate passed the much-smaller $9 billion Sandy relief bill also voted no. All five top members of the Senate Republican leadership voted no on both.
Most incredible among the no voters were Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Pat Toomey (R-PA). Those two had not just backed disaster aid in the past they actually sought disaster aid for their own states for relief from Hurricane Sandy. And Sen. John Boozman (R-AR) endorsed disaster relief for snow storms damages in Arkansas just four days before casting his nay vote.

(3,871 posts)This map is derived from the most recent House and Senate votes to appropriate aid for the victims of Superstorm Sandy. The principal color of the state indicates the nature of that state's US Senate vote - green marks two yea's; yellow marks a split vote; and red marks two nay's. Each state's black dot has a color on it to indicate the nature of that state's US House vote - green notes that more than 2/3 of that state's House delegation voted yea; yellow notes that more than 1/3 (but not more than 2/3) of that state's House delegation voted yea; and red indicates that 1/3 or less of that state's House delegation voted yea.
Some states' delegations - namely, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho - voted en bloc against extending disaster aid.
Of all the gulf states, Mississippi seems to have been the most appreciative of past aid. Good on Mississippi.
Note these changes: Murray (D-WA), Not Voting (WA to yellow) and King (I-ME), Not Voting (Maine to yellow).

(82,849 posts)But it appears they still let Sen. Graham get away with it. "I don't remember voting that way." "Well, if I did vote against Sandy relief, I'm sure I had a real good reason. Let me get back to you on that."
Anyone want to lay a dollar to a doughnut hole that this is the last Sen. Graham will be asked about this on CNN? He won't be getting back to anyone, and he'll never be asked again about this steaming pile of hypocrisy. He will never, ever be reminded that he said, "Whatever it costs, it costs."

(31,849 posts)legislators must beg for a federal aid package ... the President declares a disaster emergency and Congress allocates the funding package ... period!
People die and businesses fail (i.e., people don't work) while Congress plays politics ... disgusting.

(314 posts)"I don't remember me voting that way" is not correct English, Senator Graham. I guess you were too flustered trying to cover your tracks. There are several ways you could correctly say this: "I don't remember voting that way," or "I don't remember my voting that way," or even, "I don't remember that I voted that way." And you want to be president of the United States of America?
mdbl
(4,973 posts)how will the other republicans understand him?
NJCher
(35,658 posts)He should have said, "You know, I really wanted to help NJ, but their governor is lying thief. I knew he would take all that federal money and play politics with it. He'd pay himself and his pals. For example, he'd use that money to come up with an ad campaign that showed himself and his family hugging Sandy victims. He wouldn't really use that money to help Sandy victims. He'd use it to make himself look good.
I knew he'd deny aid to people who really needed it, and instead give it to towns that barely had any Sandy damage at all. That's called patronage, and that's what Chris Christie did with the federal aid money over in the town of Belleville, NJ, a town that barely had Sandy damage. Yeah, they got a new senior center out of Sandy. Was the old one damaged? No. But Sandy paid for $6 million of their senior center.
I knew he'd deny aid to cities like Hoboken. Remember Mayor Dawn? Well, I knew Christie would say "eff her!"
These are only a few of the scams a creep like Chris Christie would pull with all that federal money. I knew all this--and look at what Christie did with the money!
So it turned out to be a wise decision, because we all know that my colleague and fellow presidential contender Chris Christie is a lying scumbag!
You should be patting me on the back for trying to save the taxpayers from a Chris Christie money grab! In fact, we really ought to be checking into Chris Christie's presidential campaign funds--bet there's some Sandy money in there somewhere!
--------------
Now that's what he should have said. He could have kicked a fellow presidential contender in the butt and made himself look wise at the same time.
