My office is near the only unlocked door in a building open to the public so we agreed I should go. Interesting training. Interesting, not in a good way, that it is a regular thing now.

They even gave me a "certificate" afterwords. I think I still have it somewhere.

But I wanted to cover if an org provided it on a disk or thumb drive. Thanks

Not mandatory for faculty/staff, but was supposedly required for RAs and students living on campus. Notification went out to the campus community after the Virginia Tech shooting.

We recently had mandatory Sexual Misconduct training. They probably should have made the "Shots fired" video mandatory in the same way.

I should have thought of universities. I was trying to include volunteer organizations.

and did what 'homeland security' does best - spread fear. Pissed me off quite a bit.

It was just plain awful. The main thing I learned was that now, instead of hiding in a corner of a darkened room, we are supposed to escape when it seems feasible.

I don't know who conducted it... they were some kind of law enforcement. They seemed to really "enjoy" their job, if you get my drift.

I looked at ours as - you need to consider this before it happens and here are the basic situations that you will confront.

Run if you can
Hide if you must
Worst case scenario

Mixed in all that was:
Contact authorities, if you can
Don't pull the fire alarm
Close door- lock if possible
Continually assess run hide fight in the midst of chaos

Ours was all day too but they made it sort of enjoyable as strange as that sounds.

Well over 2 million employees. Both online and in the classroom.

It's best summed up as 1. Run 2. Barricade 3. Use a pen or pencil and fight back...

Basically it's flight hide or flight and consider yourself on your own.

There is a conversation about this on my Facebook links but that's has to do with pre-K students. Yeah. My daughter went through this training in kindergarten which repulsed me at first but I realized that in this absurd environment it is probably best that they receive it.

is, if there is a shooter in my building, I want to save us all. Heavy desks bar the door and I break the windows to get us out. I mostly teach on the first floor of my old-ass building.

Otherwise, we're fucked.

in Louisville Kentucky. Several years prior to my being hired the security department was actually a campus police department of about 4 to 5 officers and a chief, and bike patrol. I was told there was an incident in which the board decided to pull the certification thus eliminating police powers and removing firearms from the officers. I was hired right before Virginia Tech happened and as a result we formed a tighter relationship with Louisville Metro Police and participated in their active shooter training that was conducted in an abandoned office building. The training was invaluable but I felt inadequate as without being armed we would have no alternative but to sit back and wait for the police to arrive in the event of an active shooter situation. I later resigned after several failed attempts to convince the administration of the need to return our police powers and our ability to protect staff and students.

When I worked for a major retailer it was quite a bit more intensive and part of a two-day security seminar.

We do the training once a year...

Went to a building a year or two ago that the owner set on Fire while holding his wife in the basement and shooting randomly... she managed to get out... he didn't... we didn't put the fire out until the shots stopped... at that point we waited a good five minutes and went in... the building collapsed into the basement where he was...
