Joint Declaration on the Recent Military Actions of the Russian Federation in Syria

Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
October 2, 2015

We, the Governments of France, Germany, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America state the following in view of the recent military actions of the Russian Federation in Syria:

Begin Text:

We express our deep concern with regard to the Russian military build-up in Syria and especially ?the attacks by the Russian Air Force on Hama, Homs and Idlib which led to civilian casualties and did not target Da'esh. These military actions constitute a further escalation and will only fuel more extremism and radicalization. We call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians and to focus its efforts on fighting ISIL.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey--what a bloodthirsty, meddling bunch. They made the civil war possible by supplying millions of dollars worth of arms, and they don't give a shit how many Syrians die as long as they can depose their rival, Assad. Maybe the Turks should stick to bombing their Kurds and the Saudis should stick to bombing wedding parties in Yemen.

And then there's us. Obama authorized a "secret" CIA training program for insurgents before he went public with that recent fiasco. And we have, up until now, pretty consistently throttled any effort at a negotiated solution with the "Assad must go" position.

Everyone involved in ginning up this civil war has blood on their hands, not just Assad.

And immediately leapt to the defense of Russia by attacking other folks to divert attention.

Germany and Merkel, in particular, have bent over backwards to try to be more than fair to Russia after their invasion of Ukraine and Crimea.

...to accuse them, so I didn't.

Russia doesn't need my defense, or your approval, or the approval of the countries that ginned this up.

I don't know what diversion there needs to be: We're bombing jihadis, so are the Russians.
