General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI got a call this afternoon from the vet/adoption group said the 3 guys should be put down...
Said they had been exposed to panluc, which is often fatal. I spoke with the woman heading the group and she said they test for that on feral kittens (in the stool) because they've found that in the area I trap..I did some reading and apparently older cats that are vaccinated aren't susceptible, but until the kittens get older they need to pretty much quarantined from the rest. She said they shouldn't suffer, and I agreed, and told her I'd call her in an hour because I needed to get used to the idea.
I called later and said they probably should be put down, and she changed her tune somewhat, said they could be ok, but it might take a lot of work until they get past the point where they would be susceptible...long story short, I went and got them and they're back in my bathroom. They are still small enough so they don't try to run out, but I think in the morning I will see if I can get some help from someone who might have more room, or even can take one...I'll pay for anything, but it's the space I'm running out of and I really need to keep them by themselves and watched closely for at least a few weeks.
Anyway, please keep the little ones in your thoughts...I'd hate to lose all five since they are all very friendly (at least with me).

(2,061 posts)Thank you.
I remember the 1st kittens I was fostering. They had just opened their eyes. They were eating from a bottle and one got sickly and I was devastated. I thought, here I am, God himself trusted me with these kittens and I can't let them down. Off to the midnight vet. The kitten got better and it was one of the best feelings ever.
I've had so many cats and kittens that were mine or was fostering over the past 30 years that inevitably, I have had to put many of my closest friends (not the fosters) onto the rainbow bridge path. I did it because I felt that I owed them peace and not a lingering existence because it was what was best for them.
However, if there was a chance, I would give it to them and I'm glad the vet changed her tune. I hope you find someone else, as worthy as you are, to help.
When I check tomorrow, I hope you have great news and that they are head bonking you in no time.

(56,177 posts)Their lungs are working, that's for sure...the smaller black one is ridiculously friendly and has been from the first moment, but he's loud, and the others are starting to take his cue. The good thing is they're all eating and are pretty much healthy for a rough start, so I can't not try and get them through this.

(2,061 posts)That is excellent news!
Eating is always a good sign.
It sounds like they are getting stronger and stronger and they did have a rough start but you are helping them through it.
I'm looking forward to more progress reports.

(23,156 posts)Sometimes putting down is the best solution. I honestly cannot comment in this case.
I did have a cat who found me. She was an adult, starving, just days from death. I am so glad we took her in. She lived with me for three years and was an amazing companion.
Whatever you choose to do, it will be for the best. It's terribly hard to lose our feline friends, but keep in mind (if that's how it plays out) that you did your very best, and that's all anyone can do.

(21,737 posts)Kept her in the house, but she was exposed to the two other cats I owned. Neither of them became infected, and one lasted to twenty, the other (who often went outside) to nine (kidney failure).
You just never know, but I would have a tough time putting down an animal that is not suffering. It's a hard thing to do, and I have erred in both directions. It's a terrible judgement call, and we just have to do the best we can.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)They're healthy right now...they might stay that way and they're all pretty friendly. Besides, no trips plan so other than work I can pretty much monitor them to make sure nothing goes wrong, and if something does, they won't suffer.
MuseRider
(34,104 posts)and suspect the other 3 have picked it up as well. So many feral cats around and all of my house cats are rescued or feral cats I managed to befriend. I just assume they all have it and treat them as such, close observation of their health and the vet as soon as we notice something is not quite right.
This made me feel good knowing you had one that lived so long. Ours is 7 now and healthy as a horse.

(18,868 posts)It's amazing any cats survive on their own. The odds are just so stacked against them.
Hopefully, being inside with good food and warm air will give them a much better chance.

(56,177 posts)and clean and there are some meds that lessen the effect...I think her concern was more that they're so young it's scary...and she has other kittens in the program and wanted to play it safe with them...it was weird because she first convinced me to put them down, then she convinced me not to!

(18,868 posts)And they have someplace else to stay so they wouldn't endanger the others.
That would be an awful decision to have to make.

(56,177 posts)Because when i first talked with her she kept saying that I couldn't put them back in the colony and I kept saying that is never going to happen...she might have dealt with others who won't take on this job like a crazy person like myself would.

(3,370 posts)Panleuk is a bitch and it can be so pervasive.
How old are the kitties? Was it their stool that was tested?
My cat was exposed to panleuk when he was a bitty and barely 2 weeks old. He is 11 years old now.

(56,177 posts)One is noticeably bigger..I'm saying 5 weeks and 7 weeks...two of the smaller ones died...these guys are active and eating well.

(21,691 posts)That they're eating and being so loud is a very encouraging sign; cats who don't feel well are quiet and don't eat. It is possible that they are at the exact right spot in their development to get over it with no detrimental effects.
As I'm sure you know, handling sick cats gently and making them purr is not only reassuring to the cat, but actually does aid in their healing. I know petting kittens will be awful, but if you can force yourself to do it ...
If I didn't have a house full of special needs cats, one of which is having an episode right now, I'd be very tempted to make the drive and relieve you of a few kittens. One of our latest adoptions was a feral kitten, and she's so wild we can only hug or pet her about a thousand times a day.
I just gave them new food...two went right over...the Siamese is being tougher to socialize, but he's small enough that I'm not concerned...they'll go in to my vet later this week.

(56,177 posts)Eating and starting to play...they're holed up in the bathroom and just cuddled together yesterday, probably nervous, but now are getting used to it and eating quite a bit, which is encouraging.
