(It's from Andy Borowitz /satire/ )
Most of the plaster casts we have of Pompeii victims show them basically just lying down and whatnot, he said. If I had been in Pompeii and I heard Mt. Vesuvius erupting, you can bet I would have made a run for it.
He said another option open to residents of Pompeii would have been to fight the volcano.
Archeologists estimate that the population of Pompeii was about eleven thousand, he said. You cant tell me that if eleven thousand people put their minds to it they couldnt beat one volcano.
Carson said he would spend the next week on the campaign trail dispensing helpful tips about how people can defeat earthquakes, tsunamis, and giant asteroids.

(5,511 posts)Let's see him outrun a pyroclastic flow.
A pyroclastic flow (also known scientifically as a pyroclastic density current) is a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock (collectively known as tephra), which reaches speeds moving away from a volcano of up to 700 km/h (450 mph). The gas can reach temperatures of about 1,000 °C (1,830 °F). Pyroclastic flows normally hug the ground and travel downhill, or spread laterally under gravity.

(11,093 posts)I put in the very first line of the post that it was an Andy Borowitz column, and in case you didn't know who he was I clarified it by marking it as /satire/
That said, it's not a huge stretch of Carson's philosophy to envision him saying this. It's stupid, I know, but so is his real comments about rushing the shooter. Would he suggest that the 6-year-olds in Sandy Hook should have rushed the shooter? That's what made his actual comment so outrageous.

(31,949 posts)All the victims in Oregon were healthy adults -- not 6 or 7 year olds. Every situation has people with different abilities and histories. Do you think the people who rushed the terrorists on Flight 93 were wrong? I don't.

(11,093 posts)And in fact, one did rush him and got shot 7 times. I don't have a problem with people rushing, but you can't count on it, and if that's the extent of his proposed solution, it needs more work. Sometimes, yes, but not applicable to the bigger problem.
