But after a fatal encounter over the weekend, the combat-turned-service dog is dead, and in the absence of Mike, a 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, Bessler is left seeking answers.
On Saturday, a man on a bicycle stopped in the road adjacent to Besslers property and fatally shot Mike. Bessler was away, hunting in the Bighorn Mountains.
Mike and Bessler did two tours in Iraq that left both with post-traumatic stress disorder. Nobody witnessed the Saturday shooting. According to the Powell Tribune, the Park County Sheriffs Office believes the man's actions were justified because he felt threatened by Mike, despite the entry wounds being in the dog's backside. Bessler disputes their findings and hopes, through civil means, to find out what exactly happened to Mike."

(13,566 posts)Sounds like he had to have gotten the dog to turn around at least, not what usually happens when a dog is charging or barking at you.

(6,409 posts)I don't ride as much as I used to, but I got chased by dogs all the time. "Chased" is the wrong word. They wanted to race. On the rare occasion one tried to bite me, a whack on the nose with the tire pump usually did the trick. Why the hell was this guy carrying a gun? Was he a cyclist, or one of those guys we see riding around with garbage bags full of junk tied to his bike? I would like to know more.

(18,868 posts)With carrying a gun is that you don't look at all the other possible options.
It's a problem with the police, too. If they weren't armed they could use other methods of subduing unarmed perps. They don't need to shoot them most of the time. They need to be trained in subduing them using other techniques.
