Dan Rather says movie 'Truth' is accurate

WASHINGTON — How much of "Truth," the movie about that infamous"60 Minutes" story that ended Dan Rather's tenure as of one of network news' leading men, is, well, true?

"I was stunned when I saw it," Rather said in an interview before a Wednesday night Washington screening at the Navy Memorial. "This film is accurate - it's accurate about what happened at the time ... and it's also the most accurate thing put on the big screen about how investigative reporting works."

The Hollywood rendering of the lead-up to the 2004 story about then-President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard career is a mostly sympathetic portrayal that was based on the memoir of Rather's producer Mary Mapes, who is played by Cate Blanchett in the film.

Of course, the newsman's thumbs-up might also have a little something to do with the fact that his role is filled by aging hunk Robert Redford, who nails Rather's genial sincerity - and signature striped suspenders. On that point, Rather cracked a smile. "I'm humbled," he said. "That's not a word generally associated with TV anchor people."

What a surprise.

Same thing happened to Milk - didn't show up here until a suburban dollar theater picked it up just before DVD.

Tons of movies fall into that. I saw milk in my home to which actually is nice. I imagine the majority will see truth in their homes too. As long as people get a chance to see it is the important part.

Netflix seems to always have movies that just opened in the theaters that you can "save" to your queue once they come out on DVD. Nope - no Truth on Netflix - yet.

If it does well in those six cities it will expand. If not DVD in a month or a little more. Everyone will have a chance to watch it by the end of the year if not very early 2016.

I see some little bush-lovin' snots have already been there.

Looks like it is only showing in NY and LA areas now. It is supposed to be released "everywhere" 10/30 but my local theater doesn't have it listed. (I'm not exactly shocked by that of course.)

Because the fucking lying GOP media has been screwing us for decades.

I'm going to Denver this week to see this movie as soon as it's in a theater there.

and have not found it. Of course, living in NC with our present Republican legislature, I was not surprised. But, I'll find a way somehow to see it and I'll buy it if I have to. Hey, that's an idea. Buy it and have a house party with Sanders' supporters! Yeah, I like that idea.

Next weekend nation wide. That doesn't mean every town will get it though.

I look forward to seeing it... hopefully it makes it here soon. I can get to NYC easily but the price of transportation and the ticket would be the equivalent of a week's worth of groceries.... I can wait

Crucial Background to New Redford Movie on Bush and Rather, Part 1

A new film, Truth, starring Robert Redford as Rather, and Cate Blanchett as his producer Mary Mapes, claims to show what really happened. The film is about to open, and we haven’t seen it yet. But we thought you’d be interested in WhoWhatWhy editor Russ Baker’s own discoveries on the tricks behind the scenes to rewrite history — including indications that a trap was laid for Rather and Mapes, with the goal of scaring all media off the investigative trail. Here, from his best-seller Family of Secrets , are related excerpts. (This is the first of a two-part series.)

snip

Circa 1997, the same year as the trash-can incident, microfilm containing military pay records for hundreds of Guardsmen, including Bush, was irreversibly damaged at a national records center. When the government finally acknowledged the incident seven years later, it was described as an accident during a routine “restoration” effort.

Until May 23, 2000, the efforts of Bush’s team to keep their man’s military record from public view seemed to be succeeding. Then, with Bush closing in on the GOP presidential nomination, The Boston Globe ran a story headlined,1-YEAR GAP IN BUSH’S GUARD DUTY: NO RECORD OF AIRMAN AT DRILLS IN 1972 — Reporter Walter Robinson had obtained and reviewed 160 pages of military documents. It was Robinson who first interviewed Bush’s former commanders, only to discover that none could recall Bush performing service during that period.

snip

The Bush camp swung into damage-control mode. Bartlett called in the retired Guard personnel director, General Albert Lloyd, and asked him to review W.’s record to look for any proof of his service. Armed with a request letter from Bush for access to his files, and, as he confirmed to me, left alone in the records room at Camp Mabry, Lloyd found a torn piece of paper with Bush’s social security number and a series of numbers. Though no one explained why the paper had come to be torn, or established the authenticity or validity of the document, it would be turned over to news organizations and the visible partial-date information extrapolated upon as evidence of service.

Crucial Background to New Redford Movie on Bush and Rather, Part 2

For the Bush forces, exposure was a fundamental threat. Any new revelations regarding the candidate’s own record could be devastating, especially in crucial swing states such as Florida, chock ablock with military personnel past and present.

And the stakes were higher still: Abandoning military service is a felony with no statute of limitations. Punishment is at the discretion of the soldier’s commander, and can range from a mild “rehabilitation” to more severe penalties, especially in war time.
A Masterpiece of Spin

Anybody who had watched the Bush team in action knew how it would respond: a fierce defense, followed by a rapid reversion to attack mode. It moved quickly to suppress the Guard story, and then to destroy the messengers. Then it seized the offensive and raised doubts about Kerry’s service as a soldier in Vietnam. It was a staggering display of chutzpah, and like a refresher course in Psy-Ops 101.

The first part — diverting inquiry into Bush’s missing two years of National Guard duty — was particularly challenging. But the Bush team was primed for challenges.

If you have an iTunes account, you should rate the movie 5 stars. Right now it has four 5-star reviews, one 4-star review, and seven 1-star reviews. The only review written for it at this point is from some rw troll who gave it 1 star. Looking at his other reviews, he's obviously a teahadist.
