A northeast Nebraska man’s estate is honoring his legacy as a cat lover with a large donation to an animal shelter set to open in January.

The Animal Shelter of Northeast Nebraska has announced that it received a $210,000 gift from the Farrell G. Heckman estate. Heckman, 58, of Hadar, worked on his family farm until dying in May.

Sydney Hurley, executive director of the shelter, said she didn’t know Heckman personally, but she is learning about the man through acquaintances.

“He just seems like a very, very giving man and a big, big animal lover,” Hurley said Tuesday. “They said he had lots of barn cats because he had a soft spot in his heart for them. They say that he fed them better than himself.”
