He was lecturing her like a daddy dressing down a bad little girl. Earlier he did the same thing, telling her that the menfolk would stop and wait if she needed a break for any reason... like she might need to dab her eyes maybe, to get the smelling salts and swoon on the fainting couch in the ladies room, freshen her makeup, loosen her stays, or go tinkle.
