Gov. LePage: “That’s like giving my wife my checkbook. I’m telling you"

Gov. LePage says public campaign financing like “giving your wife your checkbook”

At a town hall meeting in Auburn on Wednesday night, Governor Paul LePage once again lashed out against Question 1, a citizen initiative to increase election transparency and strengthen Maine’s Clean Elections Act.

“That’s like giving my wife my checkbook. I’m telling you, it’s giving your wife your checkbook,” said LePage.

LePage was referring to the part of the initiative strengthening Maine’s system of limited public financing. Candidates qualify for the program by collecting a number of small contributions from voters and agreeing to limit their spending.

..............

“The governor’s attitude toward women, toward relationships and toward money are so dated as to be bizarre,” said Eliza Townsend, executive director of the Maine Women’s Lobby in response to the comment. “The Maine Women’s Lobby supports Question 1 because we know that a legislature made up of Mainers with a variety of backgrounds and experiences will make better decisions for all of us.”

really need to get their shit together. The only thing that keeps this clown in office is vote splitting on the left.

Lepage gave his torpedo, Elliot Cutler, his payoff in the form of a government position for splitting the vote a few months ago.

Cutler is not on the left. He was working for Lepage during both elections.

if he's actually just a shill for LePage it's even worse because the voters were duped into it.

Cutler effectively split the Dem vote when LePage was first elected. He most definitely attracted center-left Dems and independents who would not have voted for LePage. In the re-election, Cutler did not attract enough of these voters to make a difference and LePieu had a much higher percent of the vote. Michaud's lost ground when he acknowledged that he is gay.

The post to which I responded stated the "Democrats need to get their shit together". Cutler, as his new position with the university shows, received an appointment from LePage in what can only be described as a pay-off for Cutler running as an independent (not a Dem) and helping LePage by splitting the vote. Michaud lost a little ground because he acknowledged he was gay, but that was going to come out sooner rather than later, and what he lost was miniscule to the damage Cutler caused.

It is fucking idiotic that losers keep blaming the voters when it is the party leadership and the dirty tricks from the opposition.

That's baloney. The analyses showed that he attracted a different, smaller subset than in the previous election. What could the Democratics do differently? Work harder to gain the Blaine House. If the party had its shit together Michaud would have one by a country mile. LePage in his first term was a national embarrassment to the state and the party didn't find a way to capitalize on that. BTW, the national Democratic party dropped the ball on this race too -- no way LePage should have one had there been a campaign strategy from the national party to support Mike.
