(17,751 posts)GM tested an autonomous vehicle system in the 1950s. Photo: General Motors
In the 1950s General Motors and RCA teamed up to develop automated highway technology (.pdf) that used a buried wire and magnetic pickup coils on the car. The buried line communicated the speed limit to the vehicle and warned of obstacles ahead. Engineers demonstrated the technology in 1958, using a 1958 Chevrolet Impala and, later, the streamlined turbine powered Firebird III concept car pictured at left. Even Disney got in on the act with the animated short Magic Highway USA. But GM and RCA couldnt convince the feds to spend the additional $100,000 per mile that automated highway technology would added to the cost of the national highway system.

(15,031 posts)The bell was an especially sporty feature, and the back-step running board was useful for tennis-shoe-turbo speed.

(33,688 posts)Because my dad owned one when I was a wee lad in the early 1960s.
I once took it out of gear when it was sitting in the driveway and it rolled out into the street. I wanted to drive that car SO badly. And I did.

It was my high school cruisin' car.
Way cool.

(9,951 posts)We had one when I was growing up, had the 389 engine, automatic trans.
Wish I had one now, they're worth quite a bit.
I do have a restored 66 Chevelle Super Sport, 396 ci engine, side loader 4 speed, gets about 12 gallons to the mile, oops, meant 12 miles to the gallon.
workinclasszero
(28,270 posts)Had a Chevelle SS. Black and I think it was a 396 too.
That was a bad highway star for sure!
I love the nomad but yeah those Pontiac versions have got to be super rare.

(9,951 posts)A lot of love and money, but it's a hoot to drive, fast as hell, but cornering leaves a lot to be desired.
