Hold cop who killed (21-year-old, blind, deaf) dog accountable: PETA

A Collingwood OPP officer who hit a dog with his car multiple times and then shot the animal to death must be held accountable for his actions, PETA says.

Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice-president of cruelty investigations for the U.S-based animal rights organization, says the officer should face the same punishment as a regular person for such a violent act.

The OPP should suspend the officer, proceed with a criminal investigation and immediate audit of the current training procedures for officers, she said.

Public outcry has been growing since footage was posted online Monday night. It appears to show an officer hit a dog with an OPP cruiser multiple times and then killed the animal by shooting it.

“I can’t fathom what the officer was thinking regardless of the species of this animal,” she said. “Even if the animal was a coyote, there would have been no excuse to torture it.”

Always have been, ever since I was a little kid. Anyone who does that to a dog should be charged and tried.

The policeman's name MUST be published. Nothing else will do.

The dog suffered. And even if it was a 'coyote' as originally claimed, no coyote deserves to be tortured either.

Collingwood Connection
By John Edwards

Karen Sutherland knew the day was coming when she would have to say goodbye to her 21-year-old dog Merrick.
She could never have imagined, however, the dog’s life would end after being intentionally hit three times by a police cruiser then shot and killed by a cop.

The death of Merrick, her constant companion since she adopted the German shepherd-cross from an animal shelter in Alberta 18 years ago, was caught on video and posted to Facebook. The incident has since made national headlines.

“I feel sick about the whole thing,” said Sutherland. “I wish it wasn’t my dog.” Merrick went to work with Sutherland every day, most recently while she worked as a gardener.

“I’ve had her my whole adult life,” said Sutherland. “She’s been through five or six relationships with me. People used to say ‘Oh my God, is she still alive?’ and I used to always joke that she was still alive to look after me.” Merrick was completely deaf, but otherwise healthy.

Vigil held for Collingwood dog slain by police officer

By John Edwards

A group of about 20 gathered for a candlelight vigil on Wednesday to honour a dog that was killed by Collingwood OPP officers this week.

Neighbours and animal lovers gathered at the corner of Seventh and Walnut Streets, steps from the site where Merrick, a 21-year-old German Shepherd-cross, was hit by a police cruiser and shot on Monday. The group lit candles and placed flowers at the site and wrote messages to Merrick's owner, Karen Sutherland.

Michelle Hillman was gathering money to purchase and plant a tree in honour of Merrick in one of Collingwood’s dog parks.
“There has been a lot outpouring from the community so we wanted to channel that into something positive,” she said.

While the event was peaceful, there was still a lot of anger over the circumstances surrounding the dog’s death.
Sarah Abawi started a petition to have some action brought against the officer involved in the incident, while also calling on authorities to change the policy on how to deal with domestic and wild animals.
