5. DU is a good place to inhabit.

It is well rounded.
It allows for wide ranging dissension, all within a certain civility.

I think MIRT could be abused to create a censorship zone, so I'm distrustful. I think inevitably some individuals will be banished for insufficient reason. With no courts of appeal I know that it's inevitable that DU will implode.

But in all I'm impressed with how DU handles disruption.

8. The vast majority of malicious intruders MIRT deals with are repeat offenders.

I'm a new person on MIRT and I'm still learning the ropes, so don't expect me to sound like an expert. I'm not even close.

What stands out to me the most is how the overwhelming majority of people MIRT bans are serial offenders. The same few people keep creating accounts to disrupt the site over, and over and over again. At least that's how it's been this term. It's mind boggling!

At some point you just wonder why they don't take up knitting or crocheting, or anything where they can at least have something tangible to show for the time they spend on their hobby?

Also, if a MIRT person were to ban a member who it's deemed is not a malicious intruder, the admin can and will reinstate their account. It's not like a jury decision where they won't get involved in the matter. They're a very big part of the MIRT process, and honestly we couldn't do what we do correctly without their help.

If you can find some spare time you should sign up some time. It's quite the learning experience.

I just wanted to share a bit about my personal experience so far as a new member. Which has been very different from what I'd imagined it would be going in, to say the least.

The internet is a strange and wonderful place, and as it turns out DU is not an exception. MIRT only deals with the strange part. They leave all the wonderfulness for the rest of the site to enjoy.

It was fun at first to defend the gates against the Worst, but I could only handle it for so long. The Worst suck.

14. Folk like David Brock* can easily outflank IP patrols.

Such people have whole banks of IP addresses, and every time you try to capture them they've changed. These guys are pros. Nobody who isn't on their payroll would pretend that they're not.

That's just David Brock, who is "on our side". Consider also all those who "aren't on our side", in a world where one candidate can smear another online, with no other advantage than money.

from what I hear that allows them to get around the "no coordination with a campaign" rule; then this is a Democratic Party primary and DU is a prominent site for Democratic Party discussion, and you have your answer.

eta: and they have more money than they know what to do with.
