that he was resigning as speaker ...

What came up for me watching the shit show yesterday was that he knew that the hearing was going to crash and burn, and after years of trying to manage the stupid, got his resignation in ahead of it ...

He didn't want it because he wants a presidential run at some point and views it as something that could hurt that run.

However, it got to a point where his not taking this now, with everyone so desperately pleading for him to take it, would likely hurt his support when he goes to run for POTUS.

He got backed into having to take it ...

by supporting his election, which would let the teabaggers loose on him. He seemed to anticipate that with the demand to bar ad hoc removal votes, but these folks eat their own and they would make his life a miserable hell.
