Friday afternoon animal lovers will try their hardest to put a stop to Florida's first black bear hunt in more than 21 years.
The hunt begins Saturday and will continue until at least 320 bears are killed. Animal rights activits across the state, incluging the Tampa Bay area, are begging FWC to consider other options.
While they may be too late to stop this weekend's hunt, the animal lovers tell 10 News they want to spead a message that Floridians care about their black bears and killing them is not the only option.
They'll be holding signs in 13 cities across the state today, including St Petersburg, Tampa and Sarasota.

A couple of points I would like to make
1) Florida does not have a serious bear problem
2) Just over three thousand permits have been sold as of this morning. The number of permits equal the population of bears.
3) Those three thousand permits are in hopes of killing three hundred and twenty bears.
4) Three thousand fucking bears in a state that is 65,755 sq mi. and the guns have to come out.
I say this as a huge supporter of the FWC. They are overall a great organization as of the last decade.
I truly believe we are in a situation where not one bear needs to be killed.

(7,286 posts)A client of mine was walking her dog in her suburban neighborhood when a bear went after the dog and in the ensuing fight she was horribly injured and her face disfigured. She has been very depressed since and taken living a sheltered life which is a shame she had been a vibrant and outgoing person previously.
Just as an aside, the hunt lasts a week and ends even if the quota is not met. By my reckoning, bear hunters in the state are likely to be out of practice so maybe they wont be all successful this year. Maybe they will eliminate some of the nuisance bears and next year FWC will revisit the hunt

(30,481 posts)What you are calling "nuisance bears" are in population areas where hunters won't be. Completely false point. It takes the wildlife commission themselves, along with other state agencies, to deal with nuisance bears. This hunt doesn't address either one of your points in support. Truly neither one.
With that logic, eradicating so many more animals should come first. Bee's for one. That also includes making dog ownership illegal as well as euthanizing every damn one.

(15,189 posts)While hunting bear, one must look like a bear. Please be sure to wear dark clothing and growl when you hear hunters abound. Have your gun ready and shoot approaching hunters. You have the right to kill your own bear without others horning in on your kill. Just use the SYG law in your defense. You thought those people were going to kill "your" bear.

(30,481 posts)Look at the thought process behind the only other post to the op. They are going after nuisance bears. That is what they say. The so called nuisance bears are the ones near population centers. So, we have just issued special hunting permits to three thousand people to go hunt alongside of our population centers? We know that isn't the case. We already have enough shooting around our population centers.
