Longtime Douglas County Clerk Tom Cavanaugh, a member of one of Omaha’s prominent Democratic families, has died of cancer.

He was 63.

Cavanaugh, who has been county clerk since 1986, was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer earlier this year.

He died at 8:05 a.m. Friday at the Douglas County Health Center, where he was receiving hospice care, said his brother Jim Cavanaugh.
