Elijah Cummings has to be one of the most underrated and valuable members of Congress today.

Not only was he consistently on the ball at yesterday's Benghazi Inquis--err, I mean Hearings, but in the aftermath of the Freddie Gray death in Baltimore he was on the front lines of protesters on a nightly and was able to give protesters a peaceful conduit to express their anger. In doing so, he helped diffuse what could have been a much darker and uglier situation. (Don't forget, there was really only one day of substantial rioting in Baltimore following Gray's death. Everything else was mostly peaceful protests.)

So hats off to Rep. Elijah Cummings, Democrat from the State of Maryland.

and a great American.

He is a better person, in every respect, than any living teaparty or rightwinger alive today.

But something more. He fights. With the patience of 10,000 saints, he fights. He never gives up. And he has won. But he still has to fight to keep what's been won and go further.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Representative Cummings has been vigilant even when the rest of us have looked away. He stands on the bridge and defends us.
