Live With 18 Roommates For $1,800 a Month at Brooklyn 'Co-Living' Space

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20151020/crown-heights/live-with-18-roommates-for-1800-month-at-brooklyn-co-living-space

For the low, low price of $1,800 a month, you can live with 18 roommates in Crown Heights’ newest “community-driven” residence, located directly across the street from the neighborhood’s largest homeless shelter.

Yes, that’s right. Common Living, a new company that aims to provide “flexible, user-friendly” housing, opened its first fully furnished property at 1162 Pacific St. over the weekend, it announced in a blog post Monday.

The building, located between Franklin and Bedford avenues across from the massive 350-bed Bedford-Atlantic Armory shelter, has 19 bedrooms available on month-to-month leases for those who are looking to lean into that whole live-work-play Brooklyn vibe we know you’re striving for: “curated living space,” a private rooftop garden, weekly cleaning service, high-speed Wi-Fi (duh) and a lot of exposed brick. All utilities and housekeeping are included in the $1,800 monthly rate.

The idea, the company said in the post, is to “incubate a strong, tight-knit community of members” who share living space, kitchens and bathrooms. (But don’t worry: they’re cleaned and fully stocked regularly to remove the “hassles roommates face,” they said.)

I'd jump out a window if I had to live with 18 people.

Complete with weird, moldy shit in the communal refrigerator (mine once contained a partially-dissected octopus from the biology lab) and drunk people vomiting all night in the communal bathroom (that would have included me, unfortunately). Like I'd want to go back to those days...

Isn't that worth a bit of mold in the fridge?

Frankly, I think this will be something used by people newly arriving in town who need a short-term rental while they look for something permanent (it's cheaper than a sleazy hotel room) or those whose girlfriends have kicked them out and have yet to find a new living situation. It doesn't sound like a permanent "community."

I know it sounds outrageous, but month to month and housekeeping will be appealing to some people.

It's clean and roomy. I have seen dumps in NYC that go for more than that. It might be tough if you got stuck with some horrible roommates, however.

I was thinking the kitchen, dining, living room and bathrooms were communal.

This wouldn't be half bad if they had included private baths with the bedrooms — you can't beat month-to-month if you need to make a move.

Many New Yorkers aren't home most of the time anyway, and as long as they have someone to do the cleaning that would take care of the worst part of living with other people.

I would personally NEVER want to live in that neighborhood. Certainly I wouldn't pay $1,800/month to live with roommates.

Actually, it just occurred to me right now - part of the reason people live like that is that they either don't have a driver's license, or else they don't have a car.

Just like this. I did it once, on a smaller scale, just 6 people in one house. It was nightmarish on many levels.

But then I hate people, so there's that.
