Friday nights episode of Jeopardy! featured the Final Jeopardy! category Flowers which seems harmless enough, right?
The clue was The flower pictured here is called this, also a disparaging term for people on the political left, which lead host Alex Trebek to predict, I have a feeling that you may have found a way to insult liberals in this country.

Becky Sullivan, a producer for NPR, had no hope of catching her opponent and bid her entire $6,000 stack. After revealing her response, What is a pansy, Trebek said, Yep, you found a way to insult liberals in this country.
While Beckys answer cost her the rest of her money, she still walked away with $2,000 and her response made her a conservative hero on Twitter: @ link

I haven't listened since.

But, if one doesn't know an answer, one guesses.
I don't know if I would have remembered Bleeding Heart Liberal...been a long time since I've seen that slur. Years and years.

(1,958 posts)knowledge of what flowers look like. Panseys are a relatively common garden flower.
I would have gotten this answer/question correct.
My observarion is this, how often does a Jeopardy champion not make it to Final Jeopardy?
DrDan
(20,411 posts)I thought her answer was quite clever, albeit wrong.
(Why would you be embarrassed for her lack of knowledge about flowers? If it was all that common, it would not have been a Jeopardy answer.)
Snobblevitch
(1,958 posts)correct when one or more contestants do not. For instance, I don't do all that well with European Literature, but this question seemed easy to me.
(Iwas referring to pansys as being common garden flowers.) we have a hanging basket of them.)

(2,522 posts)Suppose that were you, and you didn't know the right answer. (I didn't know that bleeding hearts were a plant.)
You have 30 seconds to think of a flower that's also an insult. What are you going to do? Lose on principle, or take a wild guess?
Contrary1
(12,629 posts)Not sure why it should be considered a "disparaging term". People may mean it as an insult or a joke, but I don't let it bother me. I usually just thank them, and say that it's far better than being a non-caring conservative asshole.
That usually ends the discussion.
DrDan
(20,411 posts)I can't believe anyone would be offended by it. That I also find funny.
