Joe Rodriguez, a former supervisor in the Arizona Department of Corrections, filed on Monday to run for Maricopa County sheriff, a position Joe Arpaio has held for the last 24 years....
"I am running for Maricopa County sheriff to restore professionalism, respect, and fiscal responsibility to the Maricopa County Sheriffs Office," Rodriguez said in the release. "... I believe that we can be tough on crime without violating constitutional rights, without excessive use of force, and without wasteful spending."
Arpaio, 83, a Republican, has said he will seek an unprecedented seventh term as sheriff as a federal civil-contempt case against him plays out in U.S. court. U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow has yet to decide how he will rule and whether he will refer the case for criminal contempt proceedings.
In May 2013, Snow ruled that Arpaios deputies had systematically targeted Latinos during law-enforcement operations. Snow later ordered sweeping reforms designed to end discriminatory practices orders Arpaio acknowledges defying, though unintentionally.
"Joe Rodriguez for sheriff. This Joe is no joke!"
