George Martin, the Fifth Beatle and British treasure who signed the Fab Four to a label contract when no one else would, produced virtually all their songs and introduced lavish arrangements into Yesterday and A Day in the Life, has died. He was 90.
Beatles drummer Ringo Starr shared the news on Twitter, writing "Peace and love... George will be missed." Details of his death are not yet clear.

(24,010 posts)...managed to combine a natural bent toward traditional music training and classical music with the truly incredible creativity of the Beatles' composers, McCartney and Lennon, and the electric energy of the group. Even accommodated to George when he went Eastern, and to rock 'n' roll drums. Very mild, unassuming, gentlemanly guy who simply lived and breathed music and clearly loved these brilliant young musicians. McCartney and Lennon couldn't even write music when they started. (McCartney learned how later.) Somehow this wild combination of personalities, cultures, background, talents and genius--and with none of the recording advantages of today--created the most dazzling portfolio of recorded music in the 20th century.
It's hard to think of it happening, missing any one of the five main people involved. But it certainly would have been a different band, and a lesser band, without George Martin.
