CNN’s Zakaria Likens Trump’s Rise in GOP to the Rise of Islamic Extremism

This has got Fox News all wound up:

Zakaria said, “A main cause of the rise of extremism in the world of Islam has been the cowardice of Muslim moderates who, for decades, chose not to condemn bad ideas and ugly rhetoric.”

He believes they made the dire mistake of avoiding the “cancer in plain sight” and there is “a similar dynamic” at play in the conservative world.

Zakaria argued that the very same people trashing Trump these days aided and abetted his rise by, over the years, embracing “the rhetoric and tactic of the extremes.”

He said that their refusal to acknowledge there was anything wrong with the GOP feeding “the forces of anti-intellectualism, obstructionism, and population” led to a candidate who has “unashamedly” embraced all of it.

and must be defeated. We must work very hard in the months before the general to defeat Trump. He's dangerous and should not be underestimated.

The Growing Right-Wing Terror Threat
By CHARLES KURZMAN and DAVID SCHANZERJUNE 16, 2015 323 COMMENTS

THIS month, the headlines were about a Muslim man in Boston who was accused of threatening police officers with a knife. Last month, two Muslims attacked an anti-Islamic conference in Garland, Tex. The month before, a Muslim man was charged with plotting to drive a truck bomb onto a military installation in Kansas. If you keep up with the news, you know that a small but steady stream of American Muslims, radicalized by overseas extremists, are engaging in violence here in the United States.

But headlines can mislead. The main terrorist threat in the United States is not from violent Muslim extremists, but from right-wing extremists. Just ask the police.

In a survey we conducted with the Police Executive Research Forum last year of 382 law enforcement agencies, 74 percent reported anti-government extremism as one of the top three terrorist threats in their jurisdiction; 39 percent listed extremism connected with Al Qaeda or like-minded terrorist organizations. And only 3 percent identified the threat from Muslim extremists as severe, compared with 7 percent for anti-government and other forms of extremism.

way in order to protect and enhance their wealth. How much different would the Middle East and America would be if the 1% in each gave back 15% of their wealth to fund public infrastructure, create jobs, and maintain a large, stable middle class. Young people wouldn't fall prey to zealots and engage in destructive behavior.

Zakaria has a point about the moderates not keeping the extremists in check.
The difference being that moderate conservatism can make some sound points,
while moderate Islam, like most religions, does not teach much that is useful.
The moral teachings are but a small fraction of the Quran, and they are not original.

The closest thing to it on a National Stage is Governor Nikki Haley R-SC. And that is only after the Charleston massacre. She has a personal interest as a respected colleague in the SC General Assembly was one of the 9 victims.

Governor and Ambassador Jon Huntsman R-UT comes to mind as well.
Governor Pat McCrory R-NC while mayor of my city was a lot more moderate before he became a puppet of Art Pope and the lackeys of Raleigh.
