Liz Warren petition for social security

http://act.boldprogressives.org/survey/petition_SAVE_act/?source=e160307_1530-nonsign-3mo-fin&t=2&akid=31892.1755565.jvv433

Social Security isn’t a luxury -- it’s a lifeline. And for 21 million Americans, it is the only thing keeping them out of poverty.

Last year, CEOs at the 350 biggest companies got pay increases that averaged 3.9%. Much of this was funded by taxpayers because of a loophole in the tax law that lets corporations write off obscene executive bonuses as “performance pay.”

But for just the third time since 1975, millions of seniors and veterans who receive Social Security didn't get any annual Social Security increase, even though their cost of living went up.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee has been my strong partner over the years to protect and expand Social Security. And right now, we need to fight again.

That’s why Wednesday the PCCC, progressive allies, and I will bring over 800,000 petitions -- including over 160,000 from PCCC members like you -- to the Capitol steps to fight for the Seniors and Veterans Emergency (SAVE) Benefits Act.

The SAVE Benefits Act will give seniors about $581 each this year -- just less than $50 a month.

Can you join the 160,000 PCCC members who've already signed the petition? Click here to add your name and show your support for the SAVE Benefits Act before our big event on Wednesday.

This is about choices. We could use -- and should use -- the tax money that benefits corporate CEOs to help out seniors and veterans instead, while making the Social Security system more stable. For me, it’s pretty straightforward: Our spending should reflect our values, and using tax money for CEO raises while seniors slide into poverty doesn't do that.

For too long in Washington, Social Security has been under assault. We’ve heard over and over that we supposedly need to gut the program in order to “save” it. But that simply is not true.

Despite scare tactics from Republicans in Congress, the facts are clear. Social Security has a $2.8 trillion surplus. If we do nothing, Social Security will be safe for the next 18 years. And we don't have to just do nothing. With modest adjustments like closing the CEO pay loophole, we can give seniors the same 3.9% boost CEOs got and still have money left over to extend the life of Social Security for years.

For someone barely scraping by on a $1,250 Social Security check each month, the $581 they'd receive would cover almost three months of groceries, or a year’s worth of out-of-pocket costs for a Medicare beneficiary’s prescription drugs. According to an analysis, that little boost could lift more than 1 million Americans out of poverty.

A big show of public support for the bill will motivate more Senators to get behind this important idea.

Sign the petition right now. Show Congress that America supports the SAVE Benefits Act.

After a lifetime of hard work, people deserve to retire with dignity. The SAVE Benefits Act is a good start. Thank you for being a part of this,

Thank you for being a part of this,

-- Elizabeth

P.S. I've got a strong, tough, determined group of fighters by my side for the SAVE Benefits Act including the PCCC, Social Security Works, MoveOn, other progressive groups, and these senators: Ed Markey, Barbara Mikulski, Patty Murray, Chuck Schumer, Bill Nelson, Debbie Stabenow, Maria Cantwell, Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey, Sheldon Whitehouse, Jeff Merkley, Kirsten Gillibrand, Al Franken, Dick Blumenthal, Chris Murphy, Mazie Hirono, Tammy Baldwin, Patrick Leahy, Cory Booker, and Gary Peters.
