They demanded that the ACA be repealed, Planned Parenthood de-funded, gay marriage reversed and the Iran nuclear deal defeated. They demanded these things even though the Republicans did not have 60 votes in the Senate or a Republican in the White House. Now their Party is melting down because their base' expectations were so much higher than political reality could meet. Now the Sanders crowd wishes to imitate that strategy.

That said, in a more neutral tone I somewhat agree with your underlying point. However, depending how it is approached, there is some value in attempting changes even if the first attempt won't be successful. Why has the public conversation shifted so far to the rabid right in the last decade or so? Because the right wing has pushed their arguments and in enough cases were coherent and reasonable-sounding enough to get people thinking of those policies as options to even consider. (Overton window and all that.)
