Kansas policies causing a 30 million $ deficit in Wichita School district...deep cuts coming

WICHITA, Kan. -
The Wichita School District is facing a $30 million shortfall as we look ahead to the next school year. Monday night, district leaders took a look at options to close the budget gap.

What the district discussed Monday night are just options and nothing has been finalized. Some things the district looked at to balance the budget include eliminating all-day kindergarten. District leaders estimate this would save more than $5 million by eliminating staff.

There is also the thought of reducing utility usage. This could have a potential savings of $200,000 It would mean establishing temperature set points at 70 degrees in the heating season and 76 in the cooling season.

Another option is a 10 -percent reduction in non full-time employee account lines. This includes purchasing supplies and equipment and could save the district $5 million.

Altogether, there were 55 options discussed Monday night. Others include reductions to athletics and fine arts/extra curricular programs, looking at a four-day school week year round and eliminating student resource offices at the district's high schools.

I am more concerned with the loss of all day K

the loss of extra curriculum activities

The loss of fine arts

The loss of the Gateway program which is a credit recovery program for kids expelled from regular schools due to drugs, weapons, violence and such

The loss of transportation

The loss of teachers in every building leading to increased class sizes

NONE of these proposed cuts are at all good for kids

but on top of that, all of the job loses will lead to more loss in Kansas revenues thus digging the hole even larger

It was strange, tho, to see that in the face of all the huge hacking and slashing the best they could do to the heat was turn it down to 70...you'd think in Brownbackistan they'd just turn the boilers off and tell the kids, "well, bundle up, our soldiers in Afghanistan who are Fighting For Your Freedom aren't comfortable so why do you think you're better than they are?"

Sam Brownback for some reason thinks getting rid of everything that makes Kansas an attractive choice for business seeking to relocate (because God knows there's no level ground anywhere else in America, right?) so he can fund a slight tax decrease will make business flock to Kansas.

a Kansas family 1-yr refuge in my home to help them relocate, but I'm embarrassed to say that Gov. McCrory (Repug) of North Carolina is following the same path as Gov. Brownback. In several more years, our educational system will be wrecked.
