Peshtigo man with cerebral palsy starved to death by mother — also dead

Officials say 24-year-old Michael Furst of Peshtigo had cerebral palsy and died of starvation at his home sometime in late February. His deceased body weighed just 36 pounds.

The county coroner’s office and a state pathologist determined that Furst died at the hands of 52-year-old Renee Furst— his mother, who was paid public funds to take care of him due to his severe disabilities. Officials determined Renee Furst died days after her son. Both bodies were discovered on March 6th.

“It looked like when we walked in there that the son had been deceased for some time,” said Chief Kent Kline of the Peshtigo Police Department, who responded to the scene. “However I’m not a doctor, but in my opinion Renee had not been gone that long.”
