It is outrageous that these people are allowed to go to Syria, fight and then return. Security monitoring continues to be a joke. If someone goes to fight in the middle east under a non-governmental group they shouldn't be allowed to return to their home country and arrested if they do.
This really seems like common sense. If I was European, I'd be furious because this isn't already the case.

(14,088 posts)they were born in England, or America, or France. How do you strip citizenship by natural birth? Of what country does that then make them a citizen? I agree with you on someone who was naturalized.

(5,739 posts)Yes, I am entirely advocating stripping them of their citizenship or at minimum giving them a lengthy prison sentence.
If they go over there to fight for the caliphate, they should stay over there.
They can be citizens of no nation, that is fine by me. There are consequences for actions.

(1,273 posts)Do you think they would care? Or they would stop returning to Europe with a fake ID?
If you take away the citizenship when they go to Syria you concede the DAESH an actual state. This is what ISIS would prefer. Europeans don't.
And according to international agreements the state of residence is still responsible for the persons who have no citizenship at all.
So we would not win anything but lose the last tad of control.

(36,247 posts)if they are found in any country having an extradition treaty with their home country, they can be arrested and returned to face charges without any other special legal appeal. Stripping their citizenship would make it more difficult, hence less likely, for them to be extradited and charged.
An American who traveled to the ME to help ISIL organize their office software would be subject to arrest and extradition for aiding an organization classified by the US gov't as a terrorist organization. The fact that the person broke no laws of that country and committed no violent acts would not matter much -- any aid is grounds for prosecution.
Sometimes the people in charge know what they're doing.
