So a terrorist act occurs. Bombs explode. Innocents are killed. Confusion and fear abound. And where's the fucking president????
Here's an account from the WaPo from shortly after the Marine barracks in Beirut came down:
Oh wait. I'm sorry. That was St. Ronald.
Never mind . . . . .
on edit: there were two Beirut attacks in which our citizens died. I inadvertently confused them. None the less, the point remains valid. People died and St Ronald stayed at his ranch until he was caught out having fun on his horse.

(58,724 posts)That Washington Post article is from September.

(58,724 posts)But the OP specifically says that the article was after the marine barracks bombing, which is impossible.
ConservativeDemocrat
(2,720 posts)But the overall point remains. Ambassadors, members of his own administration, died. And Reagan rode his horse.
So Republican attacks on Obama, trying to say that he should "come home" and do nothing, while engaged in a particularly important diplomatic opening with Cuba, is particularly churlish.

(58,724 posts)Since that happened over a month later than the date of the Washington Post article.
Something isn't right here.
It must have been in response to a different incident.

In either case his response to stuff was usually convoluted or just plain wrong.
He did do the right thing with Beirut, pulling them out, but it was a no brainer I guess.
If Obama does something like that, we will NEVER hear the end of it.

(58,724 posts)As I pointed out above, there is no way this could have been in response to the Beirut marine barracks bombing since that happened over a month after the date of the Washington Post article in the OP.

(23,061 posts)So freaking tired of all this ginned up BS anti-Obama faux rage. Shrub stayed on vacation while hundreds were being killed in NO and didn't even bother to check on the facts, Raygun stayed on vacation while our troops were killed, crickets from the press. An attack is held in Belgium and 30 people killed and it's a national tragedy that Obama doesn't drop everything and do "something"?
Again, so freaking tired of the total hypocricy of the Repugs and their msm tools.
in search of a rationale ...
Whatever happened to not criticizing the CIC while troops are in the field?

(58,724 posts)Reagan did not stay on vacation after the Beirut marine barracks bombing. The newspaper article in the OP is in reference to something else. The date of the article is over a month before the marine barracks bombing occurred.

(23,061 posts)Sorry about that. I still stand by the Bush comments, though. I do remember exactly when that happened, especially because I had just returned from NO 2 months prior.

(598 posts)Since Reagan pulled the troops out of Beirut, no American troops have been killed by Hezbollah. I think it might still hold true up to today. There could be a lesson here.
But I guess one can say that since our troops were pulled out of Vietnam, no American troops have been killed by the Vietnamese. Go figure...

(4,113 posts)What would that have accomplished? Security was already overextended from responding to the attacks and you want a president of another country come in and complicate security issues further?
And then there are the Rushbots who thought Obama should have gone back to DC. What could he have done there that he couldn't do from Cuba?
Obama will draw fake outrage from these people no matter what. It's almost a crime that people who are this ignorant are allowed to vote.

(19,339 posts)about the downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1983/09/04/planes-tragic-odyssey-mysterious/d28343cd-c440-46b6-8575-3c2611ed124a/
"I have two statements, the first on the Korean Air Lines incident," he said. "The president is very concerned and deeply disturbed about the loss of life aboard the Korean Air Lines flight overnight. There are no circumstances that can justify the unprecedented attack on an unarmed civilian aircraft. The Soviet Union owes an explanation to the world about how and why this tragedy has occurred. At the direction of the president, the secretary of State is demanding an immediate and full account of this tragic incident from the Soviet Union . . . . He Reagan is being kept abreast and will be kept advised throughout the day as the assessments proceed by officials in Washington."
At this point, Speakes was interrupted and asked if Reagan was going back to Washington. He ignored the question and read a statement on the Middle East. Asked again if Reagan was going back to Washington, Speakes answered, "There are no plans for the president to return to Washington earlier than anticipated."

If all that were true, ignoring Brussels = No problem.
Well, maybe not all that sarcastic. There's nothing wrong with Obama (in Rethug eyes) that can't be solved by having him morph into a old cranky white guy with orange hair.
The entire world is still paying a horrible, painful price for what the reagan administration did. If there is an afterlife, reagan is not in a good place.
