http://www.thegailygrind.com/2016/08/07/trans-model-wears-dress-made-of-flags-from-countries-where-homosexuality-is-illegal/During the opening walk of euro pride in Amsterdam 2 weeks ago, 72 flags of 72 different countries where homosexuality is against the law were present, in 12 of these countries you still get the death penalty for being gay, writes Pieter Henket, the photographer who captured the stunning dress.
The COC (Dutch organization for LGBT men and women) collected these flags and together with Fashion designer Matthijs van Bergen and artist Oeri van Woezik they decided to make these flags into a giant rainbow dress, writes the Dutch photographer who currently lives in New York City.
De Hingh, who became the first transgender person ever to have been represented by IMG Models, posed in the dress at the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which played host to EuroPride this weekend.

(53,951 posts)Perhaps each of those countries will have those who will grant them rights, once it is convenient for the oppressors and their minions, yet, likely will always be reminded, "GLBT rights aren't civil/human rights, so be happy you have any rights."

In the United States, anti-sodomy laws were ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, but they are still on the books in 13 states: Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Virginia. Conservative state legislators refuse to repeal the laws and, in some cases, police still enforce them. In the past several years more than a dozen LGBT people were arrested for violating those laws, but the arrestees were freed because prosecutors wont seek convictions based on defunct laws.

(78,249 posts)Traditionally, the mahu was a man who donned women's clothing (the grass skirt) and assumed women's roles in the household, such as cooking. He was well accepted. On Waikiki Beach right next to the police station, there are four giant stones that are said to represent four powerful healers from Tahiti. The chief of them was Kapaemahu. You figure it out.
I detect the pervasive influence of the LDS church here. Polynesians connected with Mormons over a shared love of genealogy. 12 percent of Hawai'i is Mormon; probably more elsewhere.

(53,951 posts)The site I sourced discusses the number of nations where being LGBT isn't illegal but there are plenty of laws which are homophobic and make being gay troublesome, if not downright dangerous.

(25,816 posts)Of course, back in the sixties it was derogatory.

(78,249 posts)But the Asian and Pacific Islander LGBT group at UCLA is named Mahu, reclaiming it as English-speaking LGBT people have done with 'queer'.

(53,951 posts)These, of course, are just nations where being gay is illegal, there are many more where homophobic laws exist making GBLT lives miserable.

(80,708 posts)I would think that, aside from prosecutors "not pressing charges", anyone so affected at this point would be able to file a gargantuan civil rights lawsuit.
