Matt Gutman of ABC is reporting that Brazilian sources say that Ryan Lochte and his three US Swimming teammates fabricated the claim that they were robbed. Gutman reports that there is video of Lochte fighting with security at a Rio gas station.

The story originated after Lochte called his mom. She told the local press, and it soon became an international incident. I doubt the Rio Police were even involved prior to this. Maybe Lochte just wanted his mom to wire some money, and made up a story.

Why detain them? Just take the report and move one.

I happen to believe them, but the Rio police just look like a bunch of dicks, spending this kind of effort to go after the athletes instead the very real and very rampant crime in that city.

And when you're out with your buds, do you refer to them as "the other swimmers"/ No, you say "my friends" or "my teammates."

And the robbers left them with their passports, their Olympic credentials, and their phones. Yeah, sure.

if what they claimed happened happened, why was it not reported? Why was it a swimmer's mother who told a journalist, etc., etc.

Reporting it would not have made any difference in a city challenged by crime.

Years ago, I was held up at gunpoint by two young men on a dark street whilst walking home at about 10PM. The only reason that I reported it to the police was on the advice of my bank, where I had gone to stop the checks in the checkbook that happened to be in my bag. I knew that I could not recognize them: I hadn't gotten a good look at them given how dark it was, so my report would not have helped anyone. I was just creating a statistic.

I was also held up at knife point once: I didn't report that to the police.

I don't know what happened here but most of the "they would have done 'x' had they really been robbed" is probably coming from people who've never been in such a situation.

If you knew a bit about Lochte, you would know his is kind of a weenie. As stated above, "my swimmers" I am a bad ass and didn't sit down. The truth is coming out and it looks very convincing that a FUCKING 32 YEAR OLD MAN lied to mommy and created an international incident.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the incorruptibility of the Rio police, but as evidence is rolling in, it's looking more and more like they got drunk, did something dumb at a gas station, and, probably influenced by their drunkenness, decided to make up a story to cover it up.

They don't deserve prison time or anything, just a fine and retracting their statements. But the evidence is pointing to them making it up, and that's not a good thing for them to have done.

The guys tried to open a bathroom door and when it wouldn't open, they pushed on it until they broke it. The gas station manager approached them and told them they were going to need to pay for the damage. Subsequently, police showed up and did pull their guns. But it certainly wasn't a robbery and I couldn't tell from the security video, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if a bunch of guys who had been partying and drinking mouthed off, making matters worse.

Bottom line, however, is that it's looking more and more as if the swimmers misbehaved and then chose to lie about it.
