Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDear Brazil, you going to detain the British athlete who just reported being robbed, too?
I can think of no reason why Lochte and the other two swimmers who claimed to have been robbed after a night out drinking, should report a false story to the authorities. Inconsistencies in their stories about the time and other details do not mean they lied about the incident itself. Conger and Bentz who were with Lochte, were taken off a plane and questioned for hours at an unknown location.
They all admit to being intoxicated.
On Tuesday, this happened:
The Guardian reported that the victim had been held up at gunpoint while enjoying a night on the town in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A spokesman for the British Olympic team confirmed an "incident of theft", adding: "All members of our delegation, including the individual concerned, are accounted for, and are safe and well."

The nub of this incident seems to be the accusation that the American swimmers made: that they had been robbed at gunpoint by men representing themselves as police officers. But this isn't the only incident in which an Olympic athlete has made such a charge:
<snip>
Shortly before the Olympics, Jason Lee, a jujitsu champion from New Zealand, said that he had been briefly kidnapped by police officers and forced to withdraw about $800 from his bank account.

I just can't imagine why they'd make up such a story. Maybe they were intoxicated on illegal drugs, maybe they were just drunk, but it seems that the inconsistences in their story don't make a compelling case for their having made the whole thing up.

(12,694 posts)Matt Gutman of ABC is reporting that Brazilian sources say that Ryan Lochte and his three US Swimming teammates fabricated the claim that they were robbed. Gutman reports that there is video of Lochte fighting with security at a Rio gas station.
The story originated after Lochte called his mom. She told the local press, and it soon became an international incident. I doubt the Rio Police were even involved prior to this. Maybe Lochte just wanted his mom to wire some money, and made up a story.

(13,340 posts)Why detain them? Just take the report and move one.
I happen to believe them, but the Rio police just look like a bunch of dicks, spending this kind of effort to go after the athletes instead the very real and very rampant crime in that city.

(22,990 posts)I'm not trying to go out a limb to defend Lochte, I'll adjust my opinion as the hard facts and all their stories come out.
Was initially just pointing out that the video at the gas station doesn't rule out events at a different time and place. Have a good one.

(51,308 posts)Lochte made that whole story about him..."uh, yeah, the other swimmers got on the ground, but I refused." Big hero.
And when you're out with your buds, do you refer to them as "the other swimmers"/ No, you say "my friends" or "my teammates."
And the robbers left them with their passports, their Olympic credentials, and their phones. Yeah, sure.
The truth will come out.

(268,724 posts)if what they claimed happened happened, why was it not reported? Why was it a swimmer's mother who told a journalist, etc., etc.
Truthfully shit happens at all Olympics

(4,787 posts)Reporting it would not have made any difference in a city challenged by crime.
Years ago, I was held up at gunpoint by two young men on a dark street whilst walking home at about 10PM. The only reason that I reported it to the police was on the advice of my bank, where I had gone to stop the checks in the checkbook that happened to be in my bag. I knew that I could not recognize them: I hadn't gotten a good look at them given how dark it was, so my report would not have helped anyone. I was just creating a statistic.
I was also held up at knife point once: I didn't report that to the police.
I don't know what happened here but most of the "they would have done 'x' had they really been robbed" is probably coming from people who've never been in such a situation.

(268,724 posts)If you knew a bit about Lochte, you would know his is kind of a weenie. As stated above, "my swimmers" I am a bad ass and didn't sit down. The truth is coming out and it looks very convincing that a FUCKING 32 YEAR OLD MAN lied to mommy and created an international incident.
He is a FUCKING PRICK, A GOD DAMN WUSS, AND FUCKING IGNORANT.
Sorry, can't feel one bit sorry for him.

(20,709 posts)I don't have a lot of confidence in the incorruptibility of the Rio police, but as evidence is rolling in, it's looking more and more like they got drunk, did something dumb at a gas station, and, probably influenced by their drunkenness, decided to make up a story to cover it up.
They don't deserve prison time or anything, just a fine and retracting their statements. But the evidence is pointing to them making it up, and that's not a good thing for them to have done.

(5,325 posts)The guys tried to open a bathroom door and when it wouldn't open, they pushed on it until they broke it. The gas station manager approached them and told them they were going to need to pay for the damage. Subsequently, police showed up and did pull their guns. But it certainly wasn't a robbery and I couldn't tell from the security video, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if a bunch of guys who had been partying and drinking mouthed off, making matters worse.
Bottom line, however, is that it's looking more and more as if the swimmers misbehaved and then chose to lie about it.

(10,713 posts)which leaves us with a great deal of time and attention spent on some juvenile misbehavior - pulling down a sign and peeing in bushes, being mouthy, and making up a stupid story about it, a tempest in a teapot, more or less.
I've known some individuals in competitive sports (including swimming), and at the "higher" levels the demands and restrictions, especially through the most important periods of mental development, on time tend to leave competitors with somewhat limited social capacities and skewed personalities. Not in all cases certainly, but there are many challenges to being at that level, and (to be charitable) they are not always met with grace.

(5,062 posts)Two of the swimmers Gunnar Bentz, 20, and Jack Conger, 21 described public urination, vandalism and other drunken antics by the swimmers, the police said.
In his testimony, Mr. Bentz said that the situation spiraled out of control shortly after the swimmers left a party in a taxi early Sunday and stopped at a gas station to use the bathroom. Once there, the men urinated around the bushes, and Mr. Lochte damaged a sign
