Omaha dad finds pot brownies, eats 4 of them, says mean things to cat

By Kevin Cole / World-Herald staff writer

-snip-

Omaha police officers were called to a house near 90th and Maple Streets about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to investigate an accidental overdose. They learned that a 53-year-old man had been unloading groceries and found some brownies in the back seat of a car that his adult children had used earlier in the day. The man ate four of the brownies.

The man’s wife told police that as she and her husband were watching TV, he noted that he was getting “bad anxiety.” She tried to call their children to ask them what was in the brownies but couldn’t reach them. (The woman told officers that she would rather not provide her children’s names because she thought they could get in trouble. An Omaha police spokesman said the investigation into the matter has concluded.)

While police were at the house, one of the couple’s children arrived and told officers the brownies belonged to his siblings. He told them he was “pretty sure it was just marijuana in the brownies,” according to a police report.

Paramedics called to the scene who checked the man found his vital signs to be normal. But they noted that he was displaying odd behavior — crawling around on the floor, randomly using profanities and calling the family cat a "bitch." The man told paramedics he felt like “he’s trippin’.” He declined their offer to be taken to the hospital.

The paramedics helped the man to his bedroom and he got into bed. The man and his wife were told to call 911 again if his situation worsened.

Last time I smoked pot, after not smoking for a long time, I had a MAJOR anxiety attack and spent about 2 hours sitting telling myself to breath.

Someone who had NEVER smoked pot could well freak out.

It's not funny.

Some of these pot brownies have extremely high pot content. Eating four at once could result in serious consequences, and there was a case someone actually jumped off balcony and died after eating a pot cookie.

Does this isolated episode mean that drinking water induces suicide. In fact, conclusive studies indicate that marijuana users live longer than average people.

Maybe somebody pushed him off and just blamed it on the cookie. "He ate a whole pot cookie and next thing I know he fell off the balcony. I had nothing to do with it."

Back when I worked at Workmen's Compensation in the mid-1970s we got a report of a case in West Palm Beach.

Someone brought a cake and left it in the break room at a yacht salesroom. Most of the staff had slices throughout the day. They all started tripping - the cake was loaded with acid. Sounds, funny, doesn't it?

We're talking 40 to 60 year old people whose only exposure to drugs were those from their doctors or a few cocktails each day. They did not handle it well. Twenty three people were hospitalized, all for at least two days. When we got the reports in, a month after the incident, several of the older men were still in hospitals, being treated for anxiety and flashbacks. The business was shut down for a week.

I don't have anything against acid, if done voluntarily with full awareness of what to expect. But to dose people with no warning and with no way to deal with what they would experience is cruel.

I ate 1 cookie once and it was an unexpectedly intense experience. I can't imagine eating 4 edibles and having no idea what's in store. Edibles are no joke, though I have to admit I found this story amusing.

It was OK - but I snuck some into a movie - Godzilla vs some other Japanese monster.

I might as well done acid. The old Japanese movies back then had poor dubbing and often made no sense to Western audiences. When high as a kite on pot, it was surreal.

I never did THAT again!

Even if pot were legal, they created a potential toxic hazard. If it were legal, at least they could have labeled it properly.

The illegality is why they probably weren't labeled. One of the appeals of edibles is how they can be concealed and normal people don't know what they are. Putting a big pot leaf on the outside of the package kinda defeats that point.

Weed infused treats for dogs are a thing (and at least in CA can be bought without a weed card) and are used to treat anxiety, pain from bad hips, etc.

My dog's an anxious weirdo due to a traumatic puppyhood and we haven't tried them yet but we might look into it.

My mom played with a jazz band in New York City in the late 1940s and had to fake getting high from all the weed they were smoking. It never affected her in the slightest. I inherited her genetic "defect." While I was in college, a neighbor baked some brownies laced with hashish. About seven of us were fed these things, and while I never noticed a thing, the rest of them were all somewhere past Cloud Nine in less than half an hour. It's no fun being a freak of nature, let me tell you....

Recently learned of a friend who ate a brownie he found on the kitchen counter, thinking it was a regular brownie. Instead he had an unexpected high for about 24 hours.
The problem is not the pot laced brownies, it is the person who assumes every brownie in sight is for him! They didn't ask if the brownies belonged to someone else but chose to scarf them down.

Serves them right!

Eating the stuff is a much different high than smoking it. If each brownie was about one dose, then four of them would certainly make him feel like he was trippin'.
