Had they been visiting a shelter filled with kids Play-Doh would have made some sense, but I don't know what they were thinking.

I opted to give school supplies. Kids ready for the new school year only to have everything washed away or destroyed by water - their parents have larger concerns but the first day of school is a big deal to a child.

Teachers will be scrambling for supplies as well, (as teachers always do) but it will be worse now.

I was watching the school buses today and started thinking about all those first days of school in my childhood. It's a small thing but it matters.

This is the stuff people need! The basics, the mundane grocery store stuff, the stuff you run out of that you need. Imagine having nothing at all because it all got washed away in the floodwaters. Even small donations add up. Remember how well it worked for Bernie Sanders, 'eh?

and some people prefer to give care packages, especially care packages of much needed supplies.

There are levels of need during a crisis like this - the immediate needs such as rescue and a safe place to stay - with food and clothing, etc. during the danger and then the items you need in recovery - more water, more food, clean body/clean clothing, much needed and most used items to replace those lost. Different organizations often handle different transitions, and some, like the Red Cross and the United Way, which cover all areas of rescue and recovery.

I should have added pet food. Because people can help keep the rescued pets alive too. I'll look into where to send pet supplies.

Best Friends Animal Society is a non-profit who works to stop killing animals in shelters. I have donated to them multiple times.

Best Friends commits $100,000 to Louisiana flood relief

For the last week, the nation has watched in disbelief as torrential rains have devastated 20 parishes in southern Louisiana.

Without the forewarning of an approaching hurricane or the howling winds that locals recognize as impending trouble, the residents of the area in and around Baton Rouge awoke last Saturday to devastating flooding that has resulted in 13 human deaths, damage to 40,000 homes, the evacuation of more than 20,000 people and the death and dislocation of an as yet unknown number of pets and livestock.

This heartbreaking situation is compounded by the fact that much of the inundated area is traditional high ground that has never previously flooded. This is an area where people and animals are normally sheltered from storms and flooding; however, by last Sunday, the waters of the Amite River had risen to a historic high of 46.2 feet in Denham Springs, one of the worst hit areas. According to the Huffington Post, the Denham Springs Animal Shelter was “completely engulfed in rising floodwaters. Staff and volunteers fought to save as many animals as possible but eventually unlatched the kennel’s doors so that the dogs could swim out and climb onto the facility’s roof to safety.”

Throughout the week, Best Friends has been coordinating with our network partner organizations in the area and alerted our volunteers within a 100-mile radius of the disaster as to their needs. We have also begun distributing grants to local groups involved with the rescue, sheltering and transport of pets impacted by the flood.

I just wanted to make sure people also had an option for pets. When the tornadoes hit OKC a few years ago, pets were hard hit too. I was able to get a few people here to buy pet food and supplies that were sent to OKC.

I hope you are safe.
