SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - There are new developments Monday morning over the naked Donald Trump statue that showed up in San Francisco and several other cities across the country last week.
The statues, created by an anarchist art collective group, were installed last Thursday. The one in San Francisco was removed early Friday morning by the Department of Public Works and handed over to San Francisco police.
The department's spokesperson says the group could face criminal charges because it did not have a permit to install the statue.
Nick Bovis, owner of Lefty O'Douls in San Francisco is working to bring the Donald Trump statue into his custody.
He joined us live on KTVU the 9 along with San Francisco Chronicle columnist Chuck Nevius.

(1,907 posts)They even found contemporary unflattering graffiti by workers in Egyptian tombs.
Whether or not some may consider it appropriate or inappropriate shouldn't be the reason to destroy or keep. Personally I have always considered even things like graffiti, satire, etc. could have a importance in capturing the feeling of a moment in time. I don't consider that one point of view should be the deciding factor whether something should be destroyed while another kept. This to me is the same. Preserving the past starts by preserving statements of the present.

(13,390 posts)and juvenile culture. YAY

(1,907 posts)This is a big exaggeration on my part. But even the gas chambers and ovens have been preserved in Germany. That was a truly cruel culture.
As someone who is almost the same age and overweight personally I take no offense with the statue. Nor do I consider it juvenile it is satire. How many cartoons are just under that threshold of the statue? All of the small hands cartoons could be considered a implication of the same thing. Should the internet be purged of them?
loyalsister
(13,390 posts)It celebrates the meaness in a culture that treats people who are overweight with scorn and ridicule. Coumpounding the insult by associating him with people who are severely stigmatized is exploiting and encouraging a hateful mentality that is still acceptable to children and adults who tend to bully others. If it's okay to use this to ridicule a conservative why is it not okay for conservatives to do it to us? I seem to remember a photo of Obama dressed like a pimp circulating. How can we credibly defend one and criticize the other?
duncang
(1,907 posts)to me I don't believe in any kind of purging about what was done or made. Whether it would be a cartoon of President Obama dressed as a pimp or whatever comes out. There are lessons to be learned about the time or the psyche of the moment. The choice becomes afterward what is learned from it.
As to the body shaming part this statue I don't think this should be presented to a 2nd grader or even someone in a lot higher grade. As a parent and grand parent I would not want them to see it. But there is a lot of other things I also would consider inappropriate for them to see at different stages of their life. To me how you raise a child has far more importance then this. Also even if the statues are destroyed the pics will be around as long as the internet is here. And that will not be erased for a long time. It will be forgotten by most, but still there.
Anyways I'm pretty sure there will always be differences of opinions. And discussions about it or other things like it is in the end a good thing.

(80,708 posts)Trump Nude is just Trump Nude, it's not a comment on Fat People just because Trump Nude happens to be fat.
If there were some additional aspect of the art pertaining to fatness; hell, if it were called "Fat Nude Trump" or something, then yes one could argue that the point was to ridicule fatness. But the fact is, Trump is Fat and the statue is likely a fairly accurate representation of what the dude looks like nude.
You couldn't do a statue of Trump nude and NOT make it fat, because that's his body.
So maybe the point is, it's really the nudity that is the problem.
I've noticed that some people just freak out over nudity, period. They don't like the skinny, fit, or attractive nude bodies and they don't like bigger, fatter or unattractive nude bodies either.
The only common thread seems to be that they don't like nude bodies.

(80,708 posts)Are you saying fat people shouldn't be naked, because they're inherently mocking themselves?

(80,708 posts)but this isn't that big of a deal, to my mind.
Of course artistic interpretation is subjective, but the clear message of this piece is an allusion to "The Emperor Has No Clothes". Trump has fully exposed himself- not his body, but his soul- for the world to see.
This is a statement on that, I think.
The real threat to my mind isn't naked bodies, it's people taking Trump seriously. And if this art causes people to take Trump less seriously, it succeeds. We as Americans SHOULD NOT be taking Trump seriously, and if we are we should ask ourselves why.

(13,390 posts)Celebrating an unflattering image of his body to ridicule him exposes the fact that he is a reflection of US culture not just his hateful followers.
Trump and his crude comments is the same guy as people who celebrate this. They are the people who made a hobby of shaming Crhis Christie. He is the ugly American and people seem to be responding to him in kind rather than trying to elevate this election season.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Not everyone is in a panic over "crudity", and by most rational metrics US culture is getting better, not worse. Witness attitudes towards LGBT equality. The people who haven't adapted to things like swearing and breasts on HBO are, for the most part, Republicans.
Chris Christie deserves to be shamed because here's a guy who wants to put perfectly healthy pot smokers in prison because "it's bad for you". He wants to not just lecture but legislate other peoples' personal choices based upon his own arbitrary standards of what constitutes good taking care of oneself. The irony is palpable.
When people decide they're morally situated to tell consenting adults how to live their personal lives and what choices to make about their own bodies and soforth, they open themselves to criticism on hypocrisy, among other things.
Trump should be taken seriously--- as a threat. As a leader? No.
loyalsister
(13,390 posts)But he is also a shining example of US culture and the bullies it produces.
Trump represents people of all political stripes who have decided the common decency of caring about the consequences of what we say is an intrusion on their rights. Two sides of the same coin.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)The 21st century is rolling ahead, most Americans are no longer hung up on things like gay marriage or nude bodies, and the Republicans are vastly out of touch.
It's not "bullying" or fat shaming to put up a realistic looking nude statue of the guy. The point of the statue is clearly not "Trump is fat" but rather that he's transparent. If it's inherently fat shaming for fat people to be seen naked, then you're suggesting they shouldn't be allowed to be naked.
