Massachusetts judge under fire for sentence in sex assault case
Women's groups and social media users on Tuesday criticized as too lenient the two years' probation given to a Massachusetts student athlete who sexually assaulted two women as they slept, likening it to a recent California case that also raised a firestorm.
David Becker, 18, a former three-sport athlete from East Longmeadow High School in western Massachusetts, escaped jail time even though prosecutors recommended a two-year sentence.
Becker admitted in court last week to sexually assaulting two 18-year-old women as they slept after a party, and an initial charge of rape was amended to indecent assault and battery, according to court records. Becker also agreed to undergo treatment and evaluation as a sex offender and submit to drug and alcohol screenings for two years.

"We all made mistakes when we were 17, 18, 19 years old, and we shouldn't be branded for life with a felony offense and branded a sex offender," Rooke said in court, as reported by The Republican newspaper. "Putting this kid in jail for two years would have destroyed this kid's life."

(7,719 posts)Who cares if this "kid's" life is ruined, he didn't seem to care if he destroyed those girls lives by sexually assaulting them, did he? This is ridiculous. The judge should be disbarred immediately.

(7,719 posts)The judge should lose his job and his law license forever. He has clearly shown he has no respect for the law or justice. Yeah, the kid is young....big whoop. He is old enough to know right from wrong and he chose the wrong path. Now he needs to be shown the consequences of those actions...the same as every other young man in the nation has to. He needs to serve hard time for his actions so he will never, ever consider doing this again to any woman. What was this idiot judge thinking? One can only ascertain that he either did it as a favor to the kids family, was bribed, or he is just plain unworthy to be a judge. You don't get "do-overs", so you better be ready to suffer the consequences of your actions. That goes for the kid AND the judge. And if there is any proof whatsoever of a "quid pro quo", this judge should also be sent to prison, preferably for the rest of his miserable life, IMO.
