8:25 a.m.
A son of Donald Trump says it would be foolish for his father to release his tax returns.
The Republican presidential nominee has broken with precedent by refusing to release them. He says they are being audited and he can't release them until the audit is complete.
Democrats say Trump's returns would reveal whether he was paying a fair amount in taxes and whether he would personally benefit from his policy proposals.

(20,818 posts)Idle speculation is okay against Hillary, but not Trump because...
Is Trump planning to be completely non-transparent as president too? Hillary has 25 years of tax returns and basically near every freaking email out there. People are making their own stories based on that information, but at least there is transparency. Speculation is the price a politician pays for transparency, but it beats a dictatorship.

(52,116 posts)given that releasing taxes isn't a formal requirement, there's no reason why trump couldn't release just the highlights.
for example, he could just tell us the gross income, charitable contributions, adjusted gross income, and total tax owed for each year.
then he could whine about complexity and unfairness and poor mitt rmoney and blah blah blah and refuse to give any details.
the fact that he can't even provide the highlights is very strongly suggestive of something very, very damaging *even at a highlights level*.
note that connections to russia wouldn't even be visible at this level, so something has to be off even with these very high level numbers.
something like way less income than a multi-billionaire should have, or he paid zero taxes.
