As outrage sweeps across the Internet at the price hike for the life-saving EpiPen, it turns out that prices werent the only thing to skyrocket at the pharma company Mylan.
According to a report from NBC News, from 2007 to 2015, Mylan CEO Heather Breschs salary went from $2,453,456 to $18,931,068, a 671 percent increase.
During that same period, Mylan raised EpiPen prices from $56.64 to $317.82, a 461 percent increase.
NBC News reports that in 2007, Mylan bought the rights to the device, which uses a medication called epinephrine to stop potentially fatal allergic reactions in people. Starting in 2008, the company raised the price of EpiPens by 5 percent, then jacked it up to a 19 percent increase in 2009, and then another hike of 10 percent each year from 2010 to 2013.
Staring in the fourth quarter of 2013 to the second quarter of 2016, Mylan steadily raised EpiPen prices 15 percent every other quarter with the stock price more than tripling from $13.29 in 2007 to a high of $47.59 in 2016.

They're called sociopaths. To a sociopath, fellow humans are just assets to be used and exploited.

(3,813 posts)I am glad that Manchin stands up for the Second Amendment; too few Democrats do. Opposing the Surgeon General nominee might not be the most productive tactic, but whatever; it's a sideshow. His daughter's actions are far more reprehensible: actually depriving people with life-threatening conditions the medication they need. She is selfish, corporatist slime.

(35,015 posts)Mylan Pharmaceuticals is headquartered in WV. Nothing funny going on there, really!
I've worked with that pharma co. in the past and would like nothing more than to see them crash and burn; no ethics. The made a business decision that could kill a lot of people.

(15,220 posts)This is not a liberal issue versus a conservative issue.
This is an issue of right versus wrong.
Good heavens - people who cannot afford the hike in price will die. How can anyone be so heartless, and who in their right mind needs at $18 million annual salary? I'm sorry, but this whole thing is just ridiculous.
I understand business. But I also understand right versus wrong.

(2,955 posts)They're not in the business of helping people. They're in the business of making money for their shareholders and getting bonuses. Only thing that will fix this mess is government regulation. The pharma industry has been proven to be to greedy to handle drug pricing.
The electric company can't just jack up your rates by 500% overnight for no good reason. This is because they're actually regulated. Time to give Big Pharma the same treatment.
