So what is Breitbarts oeuvre? Well, its the kind of site that has an entire category of articles called "black crime." It once reported a photo of an old Adidas shirt as evidence that Islamist terrorists are sneaking across the Mexican border. It has referred to conservative writer Bill Kristol as a "renegade Jew." This is the norm, not the exception: One of Breitbarts key distinguishing features today is lurid, fearmongering coverage of minority groups, particularly African Americans and Muslims.
On one level, the significance of a publication like Breitbart taking over the GOP is obvious: The Trump campaign is, to an unprecedented degree, openly catering to racists and xenophobes.
But the real story here is a great deal more subtle. Breitbarts ascendancy isnt an accident. Its a microcosm of the broader story of conservative institutions. The story of Breitbart is the story of the traditional conservative movement being defeated by a force, a kind of white populist nationalism, that it had previously depended on.
But Bannon, perhaps intuitively, put his finger on it years ago. His vision of a populist uprising against Republican elites, fueled by cultural resentment, turned out to be prescient. Breitbart under his stewardship was perfectly positioned to be a Donald Trump bannerman.

The article makes clear that Breitbart and his successors hate liberals even more than they hate GOP politicians but it is a weird, weird operation.

(5,330 posts)I mean, he was plastered. Not just drunk, with disheveled hair and slurred speech arguing with OWS protesters outside the venue, but obviously high on some mixture of narcotics as well.
There were so many conspiracy theories among the right when he died, but he was obviously a strung out drug addict who did himself in with his unhealthy lifestyle choices.
What a monster he has created, in his wake. He's become some sort of martyr for the alt-right.
And now he's going to destroy the GOP from his grave. And leave chaos in its place.
