New details show how 'swinger' Army general's double life cost him his career

Army Maj. Gen. David Haight, Army Ranger, decorated combat veteran and family man, held a key post in Europe this spring and a future with three, maybe four stars.

He also led a double life: an 11-year affair and a “swinger lifestyle” of swapping sexual partners that put him at risk of blackmail and espionage, according to interviews and documents. Jennifer Armstrong, 49, a government employee, said she and Haight had been involved in the torrid love affair that began more than 10 years ago in Baghdad and ended this spring.

If your doing things that open you up to possible blackmail that's a big, big, big deal.

I pre screen applicants for jobs involving security clearance as as part of my job, so we don't waste resources hiring and starting to train people and submitting clearance paperwork only to have it denied. The big things that will get you denied are:

Poor financial skills that show an ongoing pattern of financial irresponsibility. Debt is ok if your managing it. Prior bankruptcy is ok if you show since you have worked with creditors and been responsible. Huge amounts of debt with no apparent means to repay, lots of defaults on debt in a continuing pattern are not ok.

Sexual behavior, especially infidelity or way outside the norm behavior that a person could be blackmailed to be kept private. If you like to dress up in a diaper and have a naked woman bottle feed you while she stimulates your genitals and your wife doesn't know about it- your not gonna get a clearance. Yes, that was a real case...

Illegal drug use. Some past use can be ok but continued is is a no-go.

Anti US government views.

Extremist views or associations.

Holding financial interests or prospect overseas is a murky area.

Ties to foreign nations.

Relationship to foreign business need to be vetted.

Strong family ties in some nations.

And the big one that gets most people- any dishonesty at all on the paperwork. Your past drug use may not be a deal killer, but if you failed to disclose it and an investigator finds and sign of it then it's a deal breaker.

“Of those who wear our nation’s uniform in the service of our country, only a select few have been honored to hold the rank of admiral — and not a single one is above the law,” said Duffy. “Admiral Gilbeau lied to federal agents investigating corruption and fraud, and then tried to cover up his deception by destroying documents and files. Whether the evidence leads us to a civilian, to an enlisted service member or to an admiral, as this investigation expands we will continue to hold responsible all those who lied or who corruptly betrayed their public duties for personal gain.
