Hospital bills

My hospital sent me a print out, at my request, showing how much BC/BS paid the hospital on several occasions. (Not how much BC/BS were billed, but how much they actually paid)

The cardio version treatment to electrically shock my heart cost $3,768.00

An emergency visit, where little was done other than the doc giving me a prescription of hydrocodone for abdominal pain cost $4,814.00

And a CT scan (cat scan) of my abdomen cost $7,840.00

That’s $16,422 in the past four months, and doesn’t include bills BC/BS paid for scheduled doctors visits, prescriptions, etc.

Thank God for insurance!

I had my husband take me to the hospital when I had bad indigestion that I couldn't relieve, everything was pretty much covered except for the fact I actually was having a heart attack and because I needed to be at a hospital with a surgeon ready, they transported me to another hospital 3 miles away and I found out the ambulance wasn't covered by insurance. I had to pay $1200 for that little medical taxi ride out of pocket. I suppose the $500 dollar deductible at the time plus the $1200 for the ride wasn't horrible for what ended up being a 5 day stay at the hospital, but I still get a bit angry about the ambulance thing (as if I really had much choice at that point in the game).

A friend of mine went to a scheduled doctor's appointment at a hospital where the doctor sees his patients.
While there he had symptoms of a mild heart attack and was transported literally to the opposite side of the building in the ambulance.
His insurance didn't cover the ambulance and my friend was billed $1,000.

No one except an idiot is going to start asking for price quotes when the doctor says "You are having a heart attack". In my case, the only thought I actually remember having was "Oh, fuck. I hope I don't die."

(have not yet gotten the surgeon bill).

The operation was done on an outpatient basis, even tho I was in the hospital over 24 hours.
The bill was 7.700.
My share is 771.00.

Medicare.

I know 2 things:

If I had had the same operation on the West Coast, where I used to live, it would be closer to 70,000

and I know that we all should be able to have Medicare type coverage.
