The Price of coal

Stark photos and article on the cost/effort/misery in coal mining

My experiences with coal was every autumn a coal truck would dump several tons of coal outside our basement and my brothers, my father and I would shovel it all into a corner of the basement. All thru the winter that coal would heat the house and it was my responsibility to make sure that a final shovel full was thrown into the maul of the furnace for the cold Pennsylvania nights. I rejoiced when we finally got a gas furnace - clean, quiet and best of all no more shoveling.
